Harmala Freebase and Harmala HCL from Syrian Rue Seeds

People continually are asking questions and feeling lost when reading the existing harmala extractions teks.

I made this step-wise tek PDF in hopes it might make things easier for some individuals.

I have attached the PDF to this post.

Nice write up, simple and with tricks clearly based off experience like using whole seeds and multiple funnel filters. Oh how I wish I did that the first time I extracted from rue!

Yup, that's pretty much what i do. I just keep all mine as freebase though, whether full spectrum extract or manske'd extract. I find freebase extracts to absorb just fine orally, so i keep mine in freebase form so i can take it orally, sublingually or smoke it, works great either way so i really see no reason to do a manske unless i want pure/isolated Harmalas and most of the time i prefer full spectrum Rue extract if i'm going for extract, feels better than the manske'd isolated Harmala extract. But yeah the extraction is easy peasy, filtering is really the hardest part but if done right it's pretty easy.

It is possible to buy sodium carbonate and skip the baking of sodium bicarbonate step. Over here it is sold as crystal soda used for cleaning bee-keeping equipement and brewing equipement. If you cannot find it you can still bake.

Yeah you can buy regular ol' washing soda/sodium carbonate no problemo. Only reason to heat baking soda/sodium bicarbonate is to heat it into washing soda in case one doesn't have access to regular washing soda, one can just easily convert baking soda to washing soda, if that's an option.

I like converting Baking Soda into Sodium Carbonate because it stays using "food safe" ingredients. You don't know how laundry-grade washing-soda was manufactured or the standards for purity + contaminants that are acceptable for a non-food-grade item... In reality, its mostly trivial, and likely makes little to no difference at all... nano-trace amounts of stuff if anything, nothing that is genuinely a concern IMO

Well. That looks quite easy. I am preparing for my first extraction, and i was looking for something updated, easy and not so confusing. Looks like this one might be it. Will give it a try. Thanx.

+1 on this - I recommend toasting it in a stainless steel frying pan, since it's fun to watch it levitating during the process. Once the levitation stops, you can place a lid on the pan to monitor water vapour development. When a cool, dry lid stops misting up, the process should be complete.

New to Rue and extractions. What a simple write-up. I've been attempting to use one almost identical but have a question. All the supposed waste fluid I'm told to throw out still has nearly as strong a green glow under black light as what I'm supposed to keep. Are there other alkaloids besides harmala and harmaline, maybe vasicine and vasicinone which also glow or am I not getting everything. I'd rather not throw the baby out with the bathwater if possible. Should I save the excess and reprocess it or is there enough left in it to bother with. Thanks.

I wish I had seen this TEK before attempting a Rue extraction. We have a Ninja blender and I made the mistake of over-blending the seeds. I tried to filter the based soup with a coffee filter & only got about a teaspoon through in an hour. I will re-acidify and let it settle, so I can discard the sludge.

Since I have the time and more Syrian Rue seed I decided to try the Harmallama Tek. It's simmering as I type. I'm so relieved to be working with unground seed this time. (y)(y)

Main trick with grinded rue seeds is to NOT filter with coffee filter. Just strain the brew with some cloth and let settle, decant from sediment and make alkaline.

Great pdf, does it work for B. caapi? Very difficult to buy enough Harmala seeds in br

Yes it works exactly the same. Just adjust Step 1 of the "Rue Tea" process.

For caapi you would want to use shredded vine and make the tea by boiling in vinegar-water for 2-3 hours. Then use fresh vinegar-water and do another boil for 2-3 hours. A third boil too if you want to be thorough. Then combine the tea from all 3 boils and reduce it down. The vine is tougher, takes more + longer boils to get everything. Boiling it will penetrate the vine shreds and won't damage the harmalas.

Then proceed normally with Step 2... ie. strain it through a filter or fine cloth, then put it in the fridge overnight to decant.

I've been following this Tek and have run into a problem. This is my first Syrian Rue extraction. Everything went well and I'd weighed and calculated the freebase yield at 3%, which seemed okay for a beginner.

I seemed to have screwed up somehow converting the Smokeable Freebase to Consumable Harmala HCL. I decided to convert 7 grams of freebase. I wasn't sure what volume of water to use, so went with 250 ml. I added a shot glass of vinegar, mixed in the 7 grams of freebase, then 25 grams of salt. The solution immediately turned from a reddish clear tea into a bright pastel opaque yellow soup. In just a few minutes it thickened into a creamy consistency.

I wasn't sure what to do. I reread the instructions and guessed that it needed more water, so I heated another 250 ml with 25g of salt and poured that into the soup hoping that would thin it down. It set in the fridge overnight & seemed to have a lighter layer on the bottom. I tried to pour off the top, but it wasn't actually separated so that didn't work. (There was no separation.)

So, I'm looking at a beautiful yellow jar of trapped Harmala and don't know how to separate it. 😥 Does it need more vinegar?

Can someone please explain what I did wrong and advise how to recover it?

Nothing is lost ;)
This step is quite sensitive to ratio of harmalas/water/salt.

When your solution of harmalas in acidic water is too concentrated, harmala hcl precipitates (instead of common Manske crystalization) in form of light brown/yellow "mud". It is still usable, just filter it using paper filter, wash with salt water. I personally use this variation of Manske. Main reason is that it is quick and I still convert it back to freebase. Hcl is just intermediate step for me, fb harmalas could be use for any ROA.

If you prefer, you could dilute it with more water (no salt), do it slowly in a water bath, add water in small additions, be patient. When fully dissolved (it will be probably 800 ml or even more of volume, if harmalas precipitated, it is quite difficult to redissolve it), add salt again to reach 15% concentration.

I diluted & filtered the yellow mud to recover the HCL. But it taste pretty nasty. I had hoped to use it sublingually. Is the yellow mud useable for this, or do I need to redissolve and grow crystals?

(Considering the production utilizes vinegar, salt, and sodium carbonate I can't image the final product is supposed to have a pleasant flavor, but I'm not sure what to expect.)

Harmalas HCl (or any other salt form) is indeed usable sublingually, but do not taste great. I would recommend you to convert it to freebase for sublingual use. In this form, rue alkaloids are just slightly bitter (and caapi freebase is almost tasteless) and its use is really convenient.
