Does anyone know what Lye tastes like? I've heard that many people's friends and family taste test their end product (I would never do such a thing) to determine whether or not there's lye contamination.
Suppose one was left with a purely white product (through freeze precip. no ammonia wash nor re-crystalization, just good technique and luck) which had the characteristic smell that it should... and it was tasted, producing no noticeable taste but a burning sensation (no visible damage to the mucosa)... Would one assume that their product was contaminated, and wash with ammonia?
Or are there other reasons why it might burn the tongue (not a "hot burning" sensation, just mild pain really), other than Lye?
Thanks!
