Tek extraction/evap process question

Hi All,

First of all, I'm still working on my essay (making sure it's quality rather than gibberish) by way of proper introduction - so please excuse the cart before the horse approach.

Secondly I stumbled across a really good Tek on the wiki (Cybs' Hybrid ATB) and at the Evap stage the tek calls for multiple trays to hold the pulls for freezing before removing the naphtha. One of the things that I was curious on was why multiple trays were required? From a cursory look I can only imagine that it allows for quicker freeze times, if that's the case - wouldn't a single large tray achieve the same thing (as long as the point of separation in the freezing process was achieved) with either multi-stage decant/removal of naphtha or just a bulk decanting of the naphtha (tip it out into a jar)?

Having not tried it myself, I'm more curious as to this step. Thanks for your help on the matter.

Hey Atmozic,

I would say the only point in freezing pulls separately is the purity. Usually first pulls are more pure as later pulls require longer exposition or even heat.
Next reason may be that the same solvent is used for all pulls.

You can combine all pulls together if you don't see benefit from splitting it.

You don't have to use dish, I am using ordinary beaker. Much better I would say.

Thanks for the reply; the way you worded it makes perfect sense. I have to clarify that I'm not criticising the owner/creator of the tek as it went into great detail to explain and teach - that particular step seemed to be pretty crucial based on how it was worded but didn't go into why 3 x trays were required, only that it was part of the required materials.

Besides purity as Pete said, freezing each extraction separately allows you to see how much alkaloid you are getting in each extraction. Let's say on he 4th extraction you are still getting a decent amount, you know you need to keep extracting.
You sort of lose this information when Combining the extractions, even though it's more convenient.

Thanks so much for the replies and the information. I made a post on the first extraction I did, the results left a LOT to be desired. So really looking forward to learn more.

Pete666 I have noticed you consistently over here in the welcome area helping new members with extraction trouble. I myself caught a great tip by reading one of the threads (where you recommend a 50 ml volumetric pipette and bulb). Thanks for being helpful I have noticed and I appreciate!!
