The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Anyone else seen this film? I was wondering if some of the visual imagery was reminiscent of hyperspace.

It is a film by Terry Gilliam, former member of Monty Python, and maker of other strange films. The story involves Doctor Parnassus, an immortal who travels around the land with a sideshow caravan, and a mysterious mirror which transports people to a mystical wonderland where they face a cosmic decision.

A deal was made with the Devil though, and now the Devil has come to claim his prize - the beautiful daughter of Parnassus.

I didn't really enjoy the film, as there were no characters I could emotinally connect with. Actually, the Devil is the most sympathetic character. However, the visual design of the film is very impressive. I think it the kind of film people here would probably get into. Here's the trailer:

yeah, saw it the other day... There was something reminiscent of psychedelic imagination in general, maybe more specially the first imaginarium scene with the boy, but other parts had nothing to do (like the woman with the giant shoes and so on).

In any case I do think its a film worth watching, has some interesting idea, though its not my fav film and there were some things I wasnt satisfied with.

And yeah I specially liked the devil character also :D

Also the monks scene was nice somehow :)

Dreamer was a bit disappointed, it could have been so much more. The script was poor and embarrasingly cheesey in places. The psychedelic bits were nice though, they were the saving grace. Yes the monk bit when the people get blown on their magic carpets, and the ladder stilts were fun, and the two pyramids. But the psychedelic bits were too childish for what seemed to be a film with adult subject matter, especially the slapstick 'baddies'. The devil was cool, I loved his fluffy ears and shifty eyes. The ending made no sense, in a bad way.

The funny thing was, he watched it after eating a little torch, and hardly even realised the effects of the cactus. Then, when he and his friend stepped outside onto the streets of London on a Saturday night, the drunks and grime really tripped them out! Reality seemed more psychedelic than the film! It was a funny parallel with the film, and we were disappointed that no awesome psychedelic wagon pulled up in the street to save us from the drunk bald chimpanzees ;)

When they got home, they watched The Adventure of Baron Munchausen to redeen their faith in Gilliam. Now THAT'S how the film should have been! A solid tale, highly recommended!

I agree with you, oha.... Indeed there were some embarrasingly cheesy moments, as well as some childish parts.. I have to agree with the feeling that theree were interesting parts but it was dissapointing..

Baron Munchausen? Never saw this one, so I definitely gotta watch it :)

Gilliam is hit and miss for me.. fear and loathing was excellent, I really liked Dreamland also, but there was one, forgot the name, with this girl and junkie parents, that I really disliked.. Will check the one you mentioned, hope its in the 'hit'
