Not to throw that old flag but maybe try a vaporgenie (even if its the wood one) or maybe one other of these vaporizing bongs/pipes (though Im not sure if theres any that works very well, maybe others know).

A very good point. If the 'pipe' and the material used have not changed, perhaps the heat source is the culprit. Were you using a butane cigarette lighter when it worked well for you? Was the flame of the same size and intensity as the lighter you currently use? Process of elimination seems to have narrowed the problem down to the heat source, your lungs or the inevitable unpredictability of hyperspace. At least one of those may be beyond our control...
