TOOL (band) & DMT

Migrated topic.

Hey all,

New here, sorry if this question has been posed before... but my experience so far has been like being inside an
Alex Grey painting, and for the first time actually "getting" what TOOL and all the esoteric texts i read are on about. My mind is blown and i love it!

So... any thoughts on the band TOOL and the relation to DMT? Would like to hear from those more eloquent that i.

Love & Light,
-Skye. x

Yes to tool! :)

Amazing music. Did you check out the Rosetta Stoned lyrics? Seems pretty clear to me that its talking about DMT (though there are some references to acid too: "deadhead chemistry"), but I recognize the experience as much more similar to something one would have on DMT ,plus the word is mentioned in the beginning of the song.

I already listened to some tool songs on the comedown of DMT, its amazing, though for the peak I preffer silence, specially if its large dose. On oral DMT/psychedelics though, I love listening to tool.

Do you like Mars Volta too? Quite different than tool and it took me a while to get into, they are much less spiritual/philophical, but damn do they sound awesome :)

Hello! I love the Mars Volta, also At The Drive-In... and Rosetta Stoned... and me YELPING! YES! FUCK! So so glad i found this place. It's like the old days when the internets first began with forums and such. Can't post this shit on FB for fear of all sorts of misunderstandings... :d

When "come down" is mentioned i think of synthetic drugs like coke or ecstasy. Haven't had a "come down" off DMT so wondered what you meant, if there is one?

No thats not what I mean.. As ragabr said, its the later part of the trip when the effects are starting to wear off/diminish. We're not talking hangover here, there is no hangover at all from dmt, more like the inverse, feeling great/energetic after, ime

So I just meant that I like to listen to music on DMT only towards the last part of the experience, if so at all..

On oral dosing, though, Im addicted to music and I cannot trip without listening to at least a couple of tool/mars volta albums :D

I don't know why people need to listen to esoteric music when they get into hallucinogens; and yeah, the lyrical themes are unmistakable, but I feel like this brings too much focus on the drug and the drug experience and not hyperdimentional, universal truths about consciousness, relationships, and the world around us. There's no tool song that has made me resolve to be a gentler, more understanding person the way that prog-pop and chillout music does.

I know we're trying to understand this thing, but it seems about as meaningless and short-sighted to listen to music with lyrics that "might be about DMT" as all those jerks i knew in high school who wore hoodies, didn't smile, and only listened to rap songs about weed. Doesn't it seem redundant, shortsighted, and junkieish to have to wrap this extreme psychedelic experience in obvious, overdone psychedelic art? It's like.. these are things for straights to use so we can say "the experience is very slightly similar to an alex gray painting."

In terms of psychedelic art, i feel like tool/alex gray are obvious, tasteless, and hamhanded, even though I have tremendous respect their talents.

I dont agree.

Its not like im listening to tool while tripping because I think one song might be about DMT... I realized that much later, and its a secondary thing. I listen because the vibrations that come out of my speakers give me eargasms, I love the patterns in their sounds, the instruments, the varying hypnotic time signatures, the vocals regardless of lyrics, and yes, lyrics too.

Listening to music doesnt prevent me from having all those insights you are talking about, but if they prevent you and if you feel that is important, by all means listen to something else. Also, there are all kinds of psychedelic experiences I like to have, and they dont have to oppose each other, and all have their place in different moments or different trips. Like listening to music, or playing guitar, or making love, or exploring nature, or sitting in silent darkness thinking about myself, or playing with animals, etc etc.

Back to music, Ive listened to chillout music for many years, going in the psychedelic trance festival scene around, but I find most of it boring nowadays. I preffer the sounds of live instruments.. So again, each one to his own.

What do you mean by alex grey and tool being tasteless and hamhanded? That makes no sense to me, considering the fine details and the uniqueness in their art (though many copied it later).

I don't mean hamhandedness like,,, it lacks complexity or he has bad hands, i mean it's unsubtle.

it's the sort of... "art-as-reproduction" thing (especially for alex). Probably my own aesthetic preference here, but in the same ways that I find, say, portraiture and landscape art rather.. unstimulating, i find alex's work to be the same way.

And yeah, i'm sure someday i'll be bored of the chillout, my music preferences move in phases, but it's the language that really gets me. Generally I prefer lyrics to be utter nonsense if I'm going to find some sort of meaning in them (beck and wire come to mind).

I know this isn't really a great opinion with regards to forum posting, but I really feel like putting things into words, or hearing a lyric and saying "oh that's dmt" is really limiting the experience from being fully transcendental. When I trip with my friends, we get to discussing things, and beyond maybe.. a <5 word thematic summary ("Glass, liquid, belief") I feel like I lose the experience if I get to laying it out in words.

I have no doubt that we all have wildly different experiences on levels that transcend vision, hearing, and a perception of space, but there aren't words for the hypersensory place we go, and I think when artists focus on the substance and just the substance.

I could go on for a while, but i doubt this is the thread for it. Identity, language, and art are things I could chat about for entire days.

Thanks for your reply, you got me thinking.

Hmmm regarding the art as reproduction, I understand where you're coming from.. I mean, if he only did his 'transparent-body' paintings, I would agree, but there's all these entities around his work, demons and other beings, or also some more 'emotional' aspects (the darker paintings for example). Or some that are highly psychedelic and really remind me of DMT/psychedelic trips, like this for example: http://metagallery.com/_img/artworks/80.jpg

Do you also think that is reproductive?

As for lyrics, I know what you mean. It was actually one of the reasons that I did not like and continue going to Santo Daime, for example, because of their lyrics-based songs during the whole experience. But for some reason I dont feel trapped when listening to tool, my mind can wander freely. And also I dont listen to it for all the many hours of a trip, I also listen to other stuff or silence or so on... Talking about lyrics without meaning, did you hear Mars Volta? Thats a perfect example to me.. I mean, he sings so weird unconnected stuff, theres no way one can take it all literally like normal lyrics, its much more about the sounds and vocals.

Unless the OP is bothered by it, I dont see it as a problem that you give your differing perspective, we can always learn from each other's opinion, and threads often anyways go in unpredictable directions. As long as its done with respect, as we are, its all good :)

Seeing Tool live is a hyperdimensional experience..nothing else i've ever seen live even comes close

I mean, at face value the lyrics are less spiritual/philosophical than Tools, but they just aren't as direct..they're so cryptic!

It was a while before i noticed all these occult motifs and themes in their lyrics, and even song names (there is tons)

I'd have to agree. The absolute best live show I've ever seen. There are some raves and parties that stand out in my mind, but seeing Tool live is an experience everyone should have, not just those interested in psychedelics.

I spent pretty much my whole high school career tripping on LSD and mushrooms, smoking copious amounts of marijuana, and listening to my Tool albums on repeat :D There is definitely an emotional connection there for me. Something I'm sure that Maynard and the rest of the band try very hard to cultivate with their audience. True connectedness through that musical medium.

The way in which the last couple albums were released (in terms of time frame) we should be seeing another album in the next year or so. I'm always so insanely anxious to hear it I can barely contain myself. When Lateralus was coming out it was like I was having an OBE everyday during the week leading up to it's release. :D It's already beginning, and the new album most likely won't be released until late 2012 :D

I recently broke thru, and had my buddy play some Puscifer songs right when i started to inhale. I think Tool makes there songs to be listened to during the DMT experience, and they are times great for it. When i started my deep meditation, i didnt really think of the first song or notice it at all, until it ended and everything disappeared. When the next song came on (Indigo Children, 5 minutes in), i was in a completely different looking place instantly, and what i saw seemed to be working with the music flawlessly, almost like a band marching. I dont know if its scientific or not whether certain sounds relate to sights during these things, but it definately does for me. I dont think the experience would be any worse in silence (havent tried), but i definately would like to try that, as i think it might allow me to go deeper.

They dont call him Reverend Maynard for nothing. Recently I watched the Schism DVD, kind of lame to put out a CD with one song, but I got A deal on it and was definitely worth it. Listened to the commentary and as they say they are called Tool for a reason, because they are a Tool for expanding our consciousness or something like that. I cant remember specifically was out of my head when I watched it, but that point stuck with me. I have listened to Tool for years in my path towards liberation. They are truly one of the great Psychedelic bands of all time. Although I may not always be in the mood for them, like the other night I had them on, but was just not in that mindset and put on another great psychedelic band the Pink Floyd.

What you need is someone strong to guide you...........LIKE ME.

"i was in a completely different looking place instantly, and what i saw seemed to be working with the music flawlessly, almost like a band marching. "....wow that is a good way of putting it...I have listened to quite a few Tool songs during my vaped journeys and there are songs that react with the trip in perfect sync. This is always past breakthrough, when I become one with all that ever was, is or will be:shock: :p ,,, Jambi was mindblowing....and Right in Two...makes my heart smile...Saw them in Nawlins last year...It was electric, all die hard fans, no assholes almost a spiritual feel....lol

third eye is one really trippy song to listen to. Tool albums have such a high quality sound. Aenima cam out like 15 years ago and I still discover sounds layered in there that Im hearing for the first time, especially in third eye. The absolute trippiest part for me is when he sings ''open my eye open my eye there we were''
