PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The police say a local man had a novel idea about how to apply what he was studying at Brown University.

When Jeffrey Martin, 22, was found with his makeshift drug lab inside his South Providence apartment last week, he told the officers that he learned about making narcotics from his classes at Brown, said Lt. Michael Correia.

Martin is no longer a student at Brown, Correia said. (Sarah Kidwell, a university spokeswoman, confirmed that, declining further comment.)

However, the police are investigating whether some of the chemicals found inside Martin's first-floor apartment at 487 Pine St. were taken from the university, Correia said.

Martin was arrested late on Jan. 19 after officers investigating a strong chemical smell coming from his apartment found containers of chemicals, drug-making products, and containers of suspected dimethyeltryptamine chemical substamine, a hallucinogen known as DMT, Correia said. Martin was in the middle of cooking the substance in a frying pan, the police said.

Martin was charged with possession of marijuana, for a bag of the drug seen on the counter, and possession of a Schedule I drug, a vial of methamphetamine the police said was in his pockets.

A regional team from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration trained in investigating drug labs was analyzing what the police suspect is dimethyeltryptamine, Correia said.

Martin was arraigned Friday at District Court and released on his own recognizance.
