Using The Search Feature

Migrated topic.

Is there a more advanced search feature somewhere? Like being able to only search posts from a certain time period, or being able to choose whether to just view the threads that match the search instead of whole individual posts? Like if I want to see if there is an active discussion going on for a certain topic or someone talking about a certain thing but not from 7 years ago.
Perhaps I want to jump into a somewhat active discussion or make sure I'm not making a post about a certain topic that has already been made 4 time today.
Or, like I'm searching for "search" in the welcome threads to see if anyone has made the posts about how to use the search and instead I have to look through a bunch of topics with the word "research" in the title.

I don't know, I feel like there has to be a better way to do this that I'm not seeing and I want to know how to UTFSE.

*Edit*

Hmmmm found this from some manual browsing around, not everything I wanted but its certainly a step in the right direction.

The built in forum search is a little clonky. I find the best results are using a standard search engine with the site tag.

ie. site: dmt-nexus.me pinoline

(Forum search option - FAQ - All your basic questions and answers - Welcome to the DMT-Nexus)

It's a shame the search function doesn't appear to recognize regular expressions (at least, not from my Linux-based list - although I am spectacularly incompetent). Furthermore, if I want to search through all my posts ever, there is as you say no way to limit the time range; thus when I've tried doing this the forum search engine pretty much crashes.

It is possible to view active threads within one of a selection of predefined set of time ranges, however:
