Viridis rooting in only water?

in reference to the propagation section of this website:

is it actually feasible to take a number of leaves and have them room while only in water?

"Psychotria viridis is a very easily propagated plant from both leaf and stem cuttings. In both cases, simple sitting in clean water will root the plants very consistently[.]"

i could not find another source which advised similar information, but upon recent inspection of some plants i had in soil i found a few of them browning so i removed all of them from the soil carefully, transplanted the leaf with the strongest root growth to its own individual pot and the rest of the leaves are now sitting in a sealed jar.

i dont know if this is a ok thing to have done and if i could get additional information it would be very welcomed.

also, if it is ok to root them in just water, are their are any nutrients i could add to the water? im inclined to put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to sterilize or a thimble full of urine but im not sure if either or both would be a good thing to do.

as it stands the one jar has 7 leaves in it, one of the leaves is in the early stages of root generation and a bunch of pieces i salvaged.

if anyone has some advise i would love to hear it

Seems that kindof answered your own question about can they root in only water.

Yes they can.. i used a ziplok bag and wet napkin before, roots in about a week,
but recently i use a ziplock filled partly with some dirt, and plant the leaf cutting.

They already root so easily, why make it more complicated...
A weeping willow cutting can make a good rooting hormone.

only put them in the jar today after pulling them out of the soil, im just not sure if they can survive in such an environment but i hope your right.

its just i lost a good 3-5 leaves as it turned out while they were in the soil from turning brown despite regularly inundating the pot full of water.

its just this entire notion of rooting them in a purely hydro enviroment is fascinating and it does lead to the question of if these could be treated as water plants like lillies (probably not but i just want to make sure that 4-6 weeks exposed to water 24/7 isnt going to kill them).

also could you please elaborate on 'weeping willow cutting' as a hormone please.

Put fresh green leaves in water so that the open wound where the leaves were attached to the branch is under water . Leave about one third of the leaf above water and put it somewhere where it gets light but not direct sun . If the room is to dry put a plsastic bag over the glass and fix it with a rubber band . Make a few holes in the bag so it can breath . In a few days roots will grow .

If the conditions that your plant grows in are correct you can bend a branch down and bury a part of it and it will root . Leaves that fall off it will root with no help at all . It is one of the easyest plants to grow that i know .

yep in the past i had a long discussion with ringworm about growing, its just their seems to be allot of information which you never think to ask at the time.

sadly i dont have a willow tree nearby but the compounds espoused about

indolebutyric acid (IBA) and Salicylic acid (SA)

now i am pretty sure i can hunt those down.

Dont waste time with leaves in water . It works but its not optimal . They tend to rot after a while and adding hormones is not needed and makes contamination apear sooner . After the roots have grown a bit they are very delicate and replanting them often damages the roots .

The easyest way to go is to plant leaves 2/3 in normal flower dirt from a supermarket . I used 1 liter pots . Then put a plastic bag over it fixed with a rubber band . Then cut a little hole at the bottom and one at the top = Gas exchange and that way you can contol the humidity . I use 5 leaves or leaf parts per pot . Those leaf parts can be as small as a thumbnail . That way i dont have to transplant all of them .

You dont need anything other than that cheep and nasty flower dirt . Perlite is expensive and they dont need it . Have we ever seen it gowing in perlite in nature ? Or is that just more W.S. from people trying to fix things that dont need fixing ?

Stay away from fertilizer . I tried it a few times . Being carefull only useing a qauter strength . It nealy killed them every time .

So for the last 15 years i piss on them once or twice a year normaly in autum / winter ....... and once or twice evey two or three years i shit on them . That has never harmed them .

As a source of DMT its not realy worth it because you need a lot of leaves = a lot of plants = a lot of humid space .

I dont harm my plants . They give me enough for a few doses each year just from what falls off them .

They hate sunshine but they like it very light ....... and they do well out side in temporate lands as long as the tempeature stays above 4 C.

THey love water and can stand in it for months . Its a very hard plant to kill and is as easy as cannabis to grow IF you give it what it wants .

in my opinion keep away from hormones . There is no need for them .

If and when i can suss out how to post fotos i'll post a few .

Rain water is better than tap water . If you use tap water you have to repot often because of the other things in the water . After a few years the soil in the pots get full of minerals / scale ?

They flower almost continualy ....... they polinate themselves and produce seeds that are viable
