Warning: Drug-related Facebook groups

Lately, I've been noticing a lot of drug-related "closed groups" popping up on Facebook. I just want to remind everybody of the potential danger in these groups.

Facebook has a HORRIBLE reputation for pretty much sharing anything that governments or corporations want access to about people or groups. Furthermore, unlike these forums where we are at least somewhat anonymous, when you post on FB, you are posting with your name, which is attached to a profile of you.

They do not respect the privacy of your posts.

In terms of security, it's essentially like walking up to law enforcement and saying "Hi I'm <xxx> from <yyy>. I'm #> years old, I work 9-5 at <zyx corp> and I do shrooms in my spare time. Hey look here are some pictures of my shrooms. Beautiful huh? I'm trippin balls on them right now!"

If you are part of these groups and in a place where such activities are not legal, I suggest removing yourself from them - or at the very least being extremely careful not to post anything incriminating at all. You never now when it might come back to bite you.

Interested to note, how many users on nexus use Tor, PGP and encrypted apps for mobile? It's so easy and I can post of nexus from my android phone with TOR enabled at the push of a button.

Well phone security is a whole different ball-game anyways. I don't recommend doing anything questionable from a mobile device at all. I promise at least one app on your phone collects and shares more information than it should, and your phone is a potentially always-connected GPS device attached to your Google account (which means it's essentially attached to you.)

Furthermore, carriers like Verizon and AT&T have been known to implement their own privacy holes. For instance, read up about "Super-cookies". Iphone users are even more at risk, since the phones send out a unique identifier that can be used to identify you directly.

But that's a bit outside of the scope of this post.

Agreed. Root that thing and it's easy to not have any google account associated with it. Encrypt it and the SD card as standard. I cap both lenses, kill the location and mobile data and keep to TOR through a VPN. Sounds like a lot of hassle but depends how much you want to lock it down. It'll never be ultra secure but it's better than off the shelf.

Ugh... that sounds horrible. Time to root that damn thing like kingofsnakes said. CyanogenMod has a Privacy Guard that should prevent this.

The courts are trying to get reddit to hand over the ISPs of the members of DNM and other illicit subject forums too so if you are one of the folks who comments there be aware. 99% of the people or more are not even aware of these issues, they just want an easy app that requires no technical knowledge. Who know what the implications will be when cybernetics are the norm. It will be program or be programmed.

I see alot of 0day exploits for facebook that let you pretty well ignore people's privacy settings. I don't think your average local LEOs will be using them, but ya never know, often times these exploits fall into legal gray areas as they don't compromise intellectual property.

Law enforcement has even gone as far as using people's facebook accounts to lure and bait individuals.

You should never say anything to compromise yourself, especially when you don't know who you're talking to.

If you are logged into facebook on your computer, or your smartphone, it tracks all your web activity, that's more than likely why you are getting drug group adds. Privacy Badger From EFF can't block facebook tracking. It embeds its self deep. The only way to stop it is to not use facebook at all. I finally closed my account last autumn....I'd had enough.

LEO's are taught to hide how they acquired the information, by lying to judges, etc. This information about LEO's being given, or stealing information illegally has become known due to the uncovering of the Military/FBI's Stingray tool.

Basically, it's a known fact now that ALL data is collected. If you make too much noise, your data/info get's passed down through the agencies, until it gets to local agencies which can act on it should they decide you are a big enough or worthy enough target. If it's only drugs, they definitely wont waste their time unless someone is selling huge amounts of a substance, because what they really want is the cash that they can steal from the drug dealer, because that's where a lot of their funding comes from.

This is surprisingly variable depending on phone model, carrier, etc. There isn't a general way to root and install a custom ROM to a phone. If you own an Android phone, consider going here to learn more about what options exist for your phone. That, and try googling things that include your specific phone model, the carrier, etc.

I agree with OP; I suggest NOT going to illicit substance discussions on Facebook. Seems like a great way to have privacy violated, or at the very least be targeted with obnoxious "related" ads.

Basic TOR set up, virtual box, encrypted email and pgp would be a nice start. Nothing mind blowing, just basic advice. Maybe encrypted apps inc cloud storage, secure text, orbot etc but those would only be applicable to android.

I'm not experienced with tor besides a couple times I used it for specific tasks to work around IP restrictions. But when I see people rely on it like a magic cloak of invisibility I kinda laugh. Wasn't Tor notoriously cracked and is no longer trusted to hide your identity online? The incident was a while back and I'm sure they've scrambled things since then... but I don't think Tor should be suggested as a 1-step solution to privacy. And as far as I know, it's easy to detect when someone is trying to hide themselves with a program like tor. To a professional like a DEA agent, I don't think tor is going to do anything more than delay them while raising further suspicion and reason to snoop.

Where did you come up with this? Your 7th ammendment right grants you the right to face your accuser. This effectively puts you BOTH on trial. Provided you kept your mouth shut like a good little boy and they don't use your statements against you. (you have the right to not bear witness against yourself, which you waive whenever you start speaking!)

That's a big deal because your lawyer should try his damndest to scrutinize the evidence and look for things that don't add up.

Every day cases are won or lost because of either something the defendant said (dummy) didn't add up, or because the accusor's accusations weren't solid. And not every cop lies, there have been many, MANY cases that got tossed out because of a mistake they made, or offered evidence that was misleading.

Ever notice that it seems like an eternity, LEO stalk their bigger prey? That's because they try and win with a superior volume of supporting evidence. -IT WILL BE SCRUTINIZED BY YOUR ATTORNEY.
