What are the small dots?

Ok so I've done STB extraction a couple of times and it has worked out well, a few days ago I decided to do a 200g extract, I'm doing the Nomans tek and washing the heptane with sodium carbonate to get rid of the lye.

This time when the heptane evaporated I see small dots all over the dish, what is it? Maybe lye?

No probably not, unless you pulled a bunch of basic mimosa water.

Possibly sodium carbonate (unnessary step imo). Possibly just spice that's very dense.

Those look VERY yellow to have been recrystalized...are you evaporating or freezing? If you are evaping you are not really doing anything.

I'd add 25mL hot heptane, dissolve all you can, stick in the freezer.

I havn't really recrystalized, why do you think its unnecessary to do a sodium carbonate wash? I find it very good because I do not get any lye in the crystals. I evaporate and never recrystallize.. It works fine to smoke yellow crystals in my GVG or alternatively make changa whith it..

A wash is pretty useless because unless you have pulled basified mimosa soup into your nonpolar solvent, it is virtually impossible to have lye in your xtals. Recrystalizing is the best way to purify DMT from Noman's tek (or any STB &/Or A/B extraction). I never wash anymore and I never have any lye in my xtals.

Lye does not dissolve in NP solvents (such as Naphtha, Xylene, Toulene, Heptane, Hexane, etc...) It is insoluable.

Even if it was you cannot smoke lye unless you are using a blast furnace for your heating source (not recommended).

You cannot WASH dmt with heptane!!!! Heptane will dissolve freebase dmt on contact. It is used to recrystalize, I guess this is where my confusion came from.

If you've washed your xtals with heptane you have mainly oils left over and lost most of your yield in the "wash".... I hope you didn't actually do this.

If you did and you kept the heptane, just put it in the freezer and you should be able to recover almost all of your spice.

Freeze precipitation is a way to get purer xtals. Most of the oils and other undesireables stay in the solvent while the spice crashes out. Plus you are not evaping a buch of petrochemicals into the air.

STB's are known to be dirty extracts (not bad, no lye, just oils and other plant stuffs)...personally I would never smoke any STB that has not been recrystalized, but that's me. If it's working for you that's good!

Hmm thats strange.. The first time I evaporated the heptande I got a lot of white salt-like stuff all over the dish, I took a pinch and put it on my tounge and the taste was bitter and awful. So I took some sodium carbonate and dissolved it into water, poured the water into the heptane, shaked and separated. And did it again with only water (no sodium carbonate). I think you misunderstood me, I did not wash my dmt with heptane, I washed the heptane (with dissolved dmt in it) with sodium carbonate dissolved in water.

So my question is then, what could the white, hard salt-like stuff be on the dish?

I think I will dissolve the crystals in hot heptane and freeze precipitate. After the precipitation when I've poured out the heptane, should I just leave the bottle open a while to let possible heptane left-overs evap from the bottle or should I scrape of the crystals immediately?

^Each has their own method. Mine is no better or worse than anyone else's, just giving my opinions and experiences with post extracted spice.



A recrystalization is not a bad idea if you are worried about the xtals.

It does sound like you did a wash correctly. I am guessing the white stuff you had was actually spice, which is bitter and very slightly awful..

I would use the smallest amount of hot heptane to dissolve your xtals....it should start crashing out as it cools down...stick it in the freezer and pull it out. In my experience it is kinda pointless to evap the heptane after that unless you have multiple grams you are recrystalizing. Keep it for your next extraction or recrystalization.

Im very thankful for having your opinions, it helps alot! I just scraped of what was on the dish and it turns out that you were right acolon_5, the dots was very very small pieces of DMT. I have already done a sodium carbonate wash so I will do a recrystalization soon.

I have found that if your solvent is clear (no mimosa wine and solvent has been checked for residue) that what you are left with is always spice.

I do urge you to try freeze precipitation (some like to evap 1/2 of the solvent before sticking in the freezer) instead of evaping. If you don't like the results you can always go back to evaps....nothing lost.

First off, that's a might nice yield!

I can't give you a definite amount, but I can tell you how I do it.

Heat up 100mL of heptane using a hot water bath (boil water, let cool for a few, put a mason jar with heptane in the water, wait until it's hot).

In a separate jar, have your spice. Add about a quarter (~25mL) of the heptane, swirl around for 10-20 seconds, pour out the heptane only, no xtals, no yellow oily puddle into yet another jar.

Add another 1/4 to the spice jar...swirl around. etc.

when most of it dissolves and you are just left with a small puddle of yellow oil at the bottom stop. Keep the oil, it is dmt and oils, works well (esp w/ changa). The heptane should be cloudy at this point (if not don't worry). wait until it cools down, cover, and stick in the freezer.

What we are doing is making a supersaturated solution, too much heptane is counterproductive. When cooled in the freezer 95%+ will precipitate out and your jar will look like a snow globe. The spice should be quite nice.

One thing I can say for sure. NEVER put a glass jar full of spice and heptane into a pot of boiling water. I lost a couple of grams that way...and the kitchen smelled like spice for a week.

What should I do when the dark/yellow oil is at the bottom? How do I separate it from rest of the heptane?

Just pour off the heptane carefully, leave the oily puddle at the bottom.
