What makes shellite clowdy?

G'day all my friend has been trying to make some spice for a little while now and is not having very much luck, he believes he has the right tree, got the ph's right, but no spice freezes out. before he puts it in the freezer he does the evap process to make sure is saturated, the shellite goes clowdy, which he assumes would be the spice. but after getting it out of the freezer, removes the excess shell. and what is left in the bottom just keeps melting. he heats some shell. up, dissolves, removes impurities, puts back in freezer, gets it out, and it just melts again. im wondering if there is no spice in it at all and something else is making it go clowdy, and freezing in the bottom. hope someone can share some light on this subject because hes getting close to giving up, and I don't think he should.

Cloudy is a goooooood sign! DMT is polymorphorous which means it can be a goo and can be a crystal. I see shellite is the australian version of naphtha... I have been in your position before with a heap of goo and heating up naphtha to redissolve and seperate but I have found the best method is evaporating the shellite completely then dissolving everything in acetone (which it does, acetone completely dissolves dmt goo where as naphtha doesn't) and then dump a load of fumaric acid in, converts it to fumarate which is stable and doesn't oxidize or turn to goo. then you can freebase that and pull absolutely pure crystals with naphtha again. This means that all that dmt goo that was hiding now turns in to pure crystals which it wouldn't have either way you tried heating the naphtha etc. This turned my yields which were 500mg crystals and 1 gram goo - 1.4 grams dmt and nmt fumarate reconverted crystals and 100mg of oily residue an or dmt-n-oxide which doesn't convert to fumarate. DMT-fumarate will store for many many months maybe years longer than freebase.

So if it is melting then it is still dmt, but you should smell it, smells like plastic indole. Why is it not freeze precipitating? Could be that freezer temp isn't low enough or that the spice feels your precense and doesn't want you to freeze precipitate it...:?: :lol:

P.S. you can find fumarate on ebay or search google for a food depot in your country and have them ship it out to you quick smart

my mate has the famuric acid already, that was the next step. But if he can shortcut that step would be choice. it does freeze to the bottom, but doesn't look like anything ive seen on this site so far. it just looks like hard clowdy frozenness, and melts into a clear liquid with a slight bit of white. With the acetone/goo/famuric acid mixed, would you let it evap or freeze? evap is the growing crystal process correct? and do you have a ratio of ace. to famuric? cheers you legend!

Right, forgot to add that once you dump in the fumaric acid with the goo and acetone... then you will see this boooooming of crystals just forming out of no where (if you have a lot). Stir it in for 30 seconds then let it all sink to the bottom. tip of the remaining acetone and then let the acetone residue evaporate which should take like 5 minutes... then, here is the important part... You take ordinary WATER and you mix that in and stir it around for a little bit, the DMT-fumarate is soluble in water and fumaric acid is not soluble in water. So do this and pour off the water and then add fresh water and pour off and keep doing it untill it is clear water or you stop seeing a loss in dmt-fumarate crystals (you will know just by looking at it, especially because if it is goo then the dmt-fumarate might be a little tan colored or something). Don't worry about ratios etc. just do it with practical proportions. Also, in my experience maybe a little tiny tiny fumaric acid crystals may float on the surface of the dmt-fumarate water, don't worry about this because the next mini-base will remove excess fumaric acid. So

* mix goo and acetone
* dump in a few grams or more of fumaric acid (309mg fumaric acid with 1g dmt is enough but you never know depending on your quality of fumaric acid so better safe than sorry)
* then pour off acetone untill a litte bit remains (evaporate remaining acetone in a seperate dish as you might get so dmt-n-oxide goo)
*evaporate the fumaric acid/dmt fumrate crystals for 5 minutes under fan
*when completely dry you will have both dmt fumarate + fumaric acid in one dish.
* put in enough water to cover crystals, dmt-fumarate will dissolve leaving fumaric acid behind
*pour off enough water for new water (store water in seperate bowl)
*do this a few times untill you see that it is only fumaric acid left
*evaporate the water under a fan (depending on the water size this should take anywhere for 1-3 days but you can find methods to quicken this up on this site somewhere look at melting point of dmt fumarate and see if you can't boil the water off)
*you can re-use the excess fumaric acid again so make sure you evap the water off that too onc eyour finished.
*if you don't want dmt-fumarate you can skip the evaporation step and just base it all up with caustic soda... that is, on the water you would have evaporated if you didn't basify.
*once basified with lye then you can do your naphtha pulls and have some pretty pure spice.

Also, about your freeze precip... it may be that you have some water stuck in the naphtha which is responsible for the "clear liquid with a bit of white", otherwise I am not sure perhaps you better give it another go on another batch and see what happends.

I concede this final basification is a bother especially after doing a long a/b extraction. I think it is more straightforward to evaporate the original collected naphtha down to nothing then take some new super hot naphtha (heated on an electric stove or via a double water bath) and pour it over the evaporated goo and mix it in with your finger... this will seperate crystals from goo more or less (goo will sink to bottom), then you can seperate the two and either smoke it or do a FASA fumarate conversion on the goo and yield some yellowish semi-pure dmt-fumarate too eat (I wouldn't inject this as the plant oils may be an issue with blood).
