Why did nexus get raided?

I only joined recently and I was absent during the raid I heard about elsewhere. I'm sure this is written about elsewhere but I haven't found it. Does anyone know what the motivation was? I don't understand why someone would target this site?

it was a DDOS attack and as far as i know we have no idea who did it or why. Could have just been some butthurt ex-member, could have been someone else with other intentions, who knows

Unfortunately, DDOS attacks are getting easier to do. Fortunately, Traveler is on top of this stuff and has ways of mitigating the issue.

There was some talk about it originating in the law enforcement sector, but I frankly can't imagine what they would have to gain from such a thing.

I did read a post somewhere (on the shroomery site i believe) from someone claiming to represent anonymous. He was speaking about his great masterplan to attack the nexus and teach us all a lesson. The reason why we had to be tought a lesson was because we apparently are elitist, arrogant and pretentious and because we constantly claim to know the absolute truth about anything.

While there are definitely exceptions to that claim for any community, I, for one, do not believe this is the case here.

We are all here to learn, not to prove anything to one another, at least that's how it is for me.

It is regrettable someone would go out of their way to attack the site. Perhaps a disgruntled ex member as mentioned or something else.

But we're still here!

There was one about the Shroomery as well. It's not really anonymous, just someone that got their panties in a bunch on IRC.

No, this was a few months ago.

A ddos attack is when enough requests are sent from a ton of computers for the website. The website can only process X number of requests for pages and when the attackers requests start to take up all the available 'room', normal requests (like us now) can not connect and will get dropped. /nutshell

Nothing is taken or removed.

Can't botnets be a valuable resource? I don't see why idiots use them to harass websites without intent for monetary gain. I can see gov entities doing so, but your run of the mill butthurt "hacker" who has issue with the nexus using a ton of resources to attack the site just because he can makes no sense. People that stupid don't seem like likely candidates for gaining control of that many computers in the first place.

Seems kind of a childish wasteful act for someone who has to be decently intelligent to amass such a botnet in the first place. Not impossible though. Just seems a bit out of place.

I dont see why Anonymous would do this... As a collective I think they would actually support a site like this. As for law enforcement I dont see the point. So I agree with the other post here, that its most likey a booty hurt ex member, but to organize that many computers, whos to say.

lol, its not anon and likely anyone saying they represent them is a script kiddy. And a ddos is a mass of packets.. Anyone whose bored or mad could have done it, server & protection was probably shit beforehand.

I'm sure it was just some dudes botnet, not a waste of time, would get a lot of info making one big enough to drop the nexus and I'm sure that wasn't their original intent. Probably got mad and targeted us.

Yeah it was a script kiddy, some immature member that got banned for not respecting our attitude and wanted to "get back". Security of the Nexus never got compromised, it wasn't "raided", it was just DDOS, so basically overloading the server. Security here has always been great, but just the server was not so fast so couldn't handle so many data requests. Now we got a really fast server, plus some more tricks trav learned along the way to mitigate any attack.

And guys, this was 2 years ago......

i couldnt imagine why anyone wouldnt respect the attitude and want to hurt the site. im a new member and ive been just reading for the past week or more. so much information i love the traveler and all of you who have given me soo much knowledge! that person is not cool. although i practice peace and love so i must say i hope that they are over it and have moved on/ grown up.
