a/b vs. stb

Migrated topic.

Is there a benefit of doing A/B vs. doing STB? :?

Does one method produce a product that is considered better than the other? If so, how?

Thanks!

In SWIM's experience, an A/B takes much much less time to get all the magic than the STB. Her stir plates also work better with A/B since they're not moving around all the plant material.

Edit: A/B also does much better with prepowdered bark, in SWIM's experience. She has never had a problem with "muddy" solvent since switching.

I keep hearing people say this, but it's just not true. Whenever I press someone to show me exactly how their STB saves time over my A/B we establish that they pretty much take the same amount of time.

Additionally, imo, understanding the A/B give you a holistic understanding of what's going on chemically and is worthwhile at the very least for your own edification (and because it's the "correct" or "complete" procedure).

A/B is far superior.

To rinse the bark completely with an STB takes about 1 week. An A/B takes 1 day. An A/B is more hands on though... but that's how I like it :)

Another advantage of A/B is that you end up with a much smaller volume of liquid.
A 200g STB extraction typically has a volume of 3 liters, whereas an A/B will have (after reduction) a volume of less than 1 liter.

Also, much less base is required. A 200g STB uses 200g NaOH. The same A/B uses less than 50g.

Definitely agree but to get a quick dose you can get a dose of spice in a few hours with a STB which you can't with an A/B.
