In my friend's search for a way to extract MHRB at a pH lower than 12-13 with naptha he tried an albumen clarification of the acid extract.
He writes:
"Pre-powdered bark was simmered in 2 changes of 1/2 vinegar water and two changes of plain water 12 hours each.
Extracts were combined and divided in two.
One half was whisked with six egg whites and slowly brought to a simmer - the egg coagulated and rose to the top. It was skimmed off, the liquid was allowed to cool and was then strained.
Both acid solutions were reduced until just starting to visibly thicken and then refrigerated.

The left jar is the clarified one.

The clarified solution was then divided in two and half was basified to pH 11 and half to pH 13.
All of the non clarified solution was basified to pH 13 and all three solutions were extracted with naptha.

Left to right; non clarified, clarified pH 11, clarified pH 13.
This was after two days so there was plenty of time for that emulsion to settle on that pH 11.
The other two solutions were separated and freeze precipitated and yielded and equal amount of very clean white crystals.
All of the basified solutions were combined and are being pulled with more naptha.

So something sure got pulled out of there.
Certainly not what forms those emulsions but also not the alks.
Could be a good clean up for Aya use.
I'm also interested in the precipitate in the pH 11 jar - wouldn't a cleaner precipitate fall from a cleaner solution?
Anyway, since no alks seem to be lost, I think I'll try this on my next cactus extraction where I need all of the de-gunking I can get."
