It starts off mostly talking about hair samples they found showing nicotine traces, then it goes on to talk about how it was suspected they only used tobacco for a short period then moved on to hallucinogenic SNUFFING of DMT containing plants(cebil) to be exact. :D

Reading this made me happy, it was well written and seemed unbiased didn't spread any negative news about DMT, just that it wasn't used in a hierarchy with tobacco as originally thought, but everyone had access to it, the info given seems fairly accurate and even states it wasn't just used for hallucinogenic purposes but also medicinal. Decent read for a yahoo article!

Nice article, I just wonder how they can make such a statement based on research over 56 mummies? I always thought that if you were put in a tomb or mummiefied you already had some kind of status in those societies, meaning that the research subjects weren't from "lower classes". To state that everyone had access to these compounds seems a bit far off.

Other than that pretty interesting, but very basic.

I believe the article stated NOT ALL mummies were exhumed from a tomb but some were simply found buried.

EDIT: yeah read this part, not only is it implied in the statement but also specifically says in soil.

Evidence in mummy hair

To get a better understanding of hallucinogen use in SPA throughout the ages, Niemeyer and his colleague Javier Echeverría analyzed hair samples of 56 mummies from the Late Formative to the Late Intermediate periods of SPA (100 B.C. to A.D. 1450). The mummies, Niemeyer explained, were in good condition, preserved naturally from the high temperatures, extreme dryness and high soil salinity in the Atacama Desert. Depending on the site, the mummies were either interred in the ground or entombed in "some sort of stony environment made for them."
