Ayahuasca tourism

I first heard of Ayahuasca tourism in the back of a long defunct magazine, called TRP (the resonance project) way back in maybe 98. Nowadays this subject has been mentioned in both Time magazine and the New York Times. So now it's been over a decade of myself feeling a bit sceptical and rather curious. Before I even knew of the existance of yage I had a longing to visit the Amazon. Both the deep rain forests of Brazil and the mountainous Peruvian regions hold great appeal. Closest I've ever gotten is central America--and I loved it there.

I'm long due for a vacation and seriously considering this.

Anyone here have any experience with taking one of these tours? Care to review a particuliar company, or have any other thoughts to share?

I would keep in mind that if it's a vacation that you're looking for, that ayahuasca tourism will probably be far from relaxing. I'm sure you realized that though.

I'd say evaluate your expectations carefully. I know some of the places down there are held in fairly high regard by the people at the ayahuasca forums.

I think I see what you are getting at. As I said before, I've long wanted to visit the Amazon. It feels like the time is right. Furthermore, it is currently within my means. However, the more I research and think about the Tourist route, my initially mixed feelings are not at all allayed.

I don't like the sacrement becoming commercialised. I don't like the capitalistic aspect, the potentially exploltive element....I'm also slow to pronounce such judgements.


Personally, my great concern is that these people are pissing in the holy water.

My great hope is that they are not. the reality of the situation may be a mixed bag.

It is a likelihood that I may just visit the Amazon, see ruins, get in touch with the rain forest, connect with the life down there (without getting eaten) have a beautiful time--possibly seeking out a true life curandero. Possibly merely coming home to enjoy my own mimosa/rue drink. But the tourist route is definately one option that I want to know more about.


Whatever I end up doing I have no plans of pissing in the holy water myself. There is an eco-system down there not to be damaged, all sorts of animal vegetable and mineral life to be respected and feared, locals to not be currupted and ancient rituals to be approached with great reverence.
