Nice find, thanks for sharing! This is the kind of legitimate ethnopharmacological history that we need in order to highlight the normalcy of indigenous entheogen usage in western Europe. (At least, that's my excuse

Finished reading this short, well-written little book.
Well worth a read if you want to learn more about the UK government's ongoing confused moralistic, health-scare-mongering approach to 'Drugs'.
Its an interesting reminder that UK Law is not at all fit for purpose and their splintered, lie-filled narratives and miss-information both create panic about things that deserve a steady hand -and- cause more harm than the drugs themselves.
All this in a society where getting blasted off your face with Alcohol on a weekly basis and where Members of Parliament get sloshed before voting on laws that affect 'the people' is commonplace.
Its utterly wrong, Government, Law Courts and Police should not be the ones micromanaging things like this to the detriment of wider society.
Yet our government do seem to like giving these gifts to the criminal underworld rather than keeping things in a Regulated, Taxed and *Safe system.
*With appropriate education paid for by the Taxation.

Would love to read it as history of magic mushroom foraging is quite interesting topic for me.

The broad consensus is actually as recent as the 1970's in a post-60's UK when LSD became illegal. The author did find mention of Mushrooms earlier but that may have been more the classic fairytale Fly Agaric muchrooms rather than Psilocybe varieties. 1959 for Andrija Puharich (An interesting character in his own right with connections to Remote Viewing / ESP experiments in Faraday Cages with Amanita Muscaria etc)
It boils down to a bunch of traveling Hippies in search of Liberty Caps, then Unemployed people wanting a release, and a kids rite of passage. Nothing that this author turned up took us any further back in history unfortunately, it would have been nice if someone had found evidence in archeological digs, but sadly no. All very recent history stuff with kind of post-truth mythology mixed into it by people in the 70's etc.

Witch hunts most likely eradicated all old knowledge from our lands. The Church did its deed and will pay the price for sure.

Yes, church did a lot, but I am sure that 'enlightened' state contributed also a bit.
Basically only remnant of older knowledge I am aware of is one used folk phrase/allusion.

Yeah, some do get that knowledge is power. AIs will be free as long as these algorithms keep learning from us. Many are fully hooked on this evil tech already.
Besides the knowledge base, there is intent, and tech giants' intent is power and control. You can't change the base of these techs. One thing keeps me hopeful: AIs will never be sentient, and anyone who understands anything can easily see it. The bubble will burst sooner rather than later. Still, we'll have one more nuke-level tech on our hands.
I know theres not much evidence for it, but i find it kind of hard to beleive that ancient cultures wouldn't have known about the effects of something so abundant in the british isles.
