Chemistry of root bark extractions

Can anyone point me to a resource / thread / whatever that might help me understand the chemical processes going on in a typical bark extraction? My goal is to try and figure out why some methods seem to work so much better than others, and which aspects of a tek specifically affect the pull (like, how come Cyb's salt tek instantly 5x'd my yield from 50 g of wood compared to a regular old lye extraction).
