Chopping up thick bark - Hint Page

Migrated topic.

Hello everyone, SWIM just busted the skin of all his knuckles trying to chop up some thick acacia bark...any hints for making the job easier, there is 2kg to go through so its going to F****ing sting if i have to do it with hand clippers.

Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

EDIT: Could you cook it in vinegar solution for a while then try to cut it in a blender then chuck it back in the pot?

Any brands of grinders that work and places to buy them would be helpful aswell, i dont even know where to start searching.

A friend of mines would soak mimosa and cappi with cider vinegar for 24 hours then try get it ina blender and blend and it worked great, That was after smashing with a hammer in a towel, though now we buy shredded or pre powdered, makes life much easier lol

if you're frequently doing 2kg batches then the best investment you could make is a garden mulcher. Talon is good, GMC is not. Cost about $220. Run it through that maybe 5 times and then process the whole lot in a coffee grinder bit by bit. Clippers is not the way to do it

also, use HCl or even better phosphoric acid for your extraction.
Vinegar is not choice

Thanks all for you're helpful hints, i also found out after a bit of searching on ebay that the grinder used in the tech is the "BarVista Coffee and Spice Grinder BCG300" - SWIM has no idea where to get it, but will have to hunt around, might even invest in that garden mulcher...would make life so much easier...might even make some extra mulch for the guinea pigs :D
So its good to know that u can soak the bark before chopping, because this stuff is really thick, even for a heavy duty coffee grinder.

Are you using the LexTek Juggz?

Yeah that's the grinder but it's a piece of crap, i've had to replace it three times so far (broken blades - trying to grind bits too large) plus the motor has gone twice.

Actually that's unfair, it's actually a great grinder, but not if you want to sit there and work 2kgs of bark through it. If you did it in four goes at least an hour apart it should be fine

you get that grinder at Myer, it's about $50

Yeah what he said

I stick with the same grinder because it's still under warranty so they keep giving me new ones. Apparently blenders do work well also.

The main part is getting it down in size, mulcher is by far the way to go

Dude i had a look at petrol mulchers on the weekend. $2000, i dont have that kinda dosh layin around...might have a mate who has one...i'll have to fish around.
SWIMS decided to get a 2000w blender with glass beaker...should do the trick if SWIM acid soaks the bark for 24hours. only costs $244 from 'the good guys' pay cash, pay less :-D

You could hire a mulcher for the weekend from Coates Hire, it might cost $50 but you could prep up 10 or 20kg batches and just work through them for the rest of the year :d
