I have no illusions about the true reasons for western intervention in lybia. But he WAS a very brutal dictator who killed tens of thousands of innocent people, if not more.
It´s not a black/white world. Not every enemy of western imperialism is a gandhi.
Never said it was a black and white world. Never claimed he was a good guy, and certainly not a Gandhi. But he certainly was not as brutal as western propagandists made him out to be. I would be interested in more information about these sources claiming he killed tens of thousands of 'innocent' people. If you got that from the mainstream media (ie: propaganda press) it is highly suspect and likely blatantly false information.
Some of the things we do know about his rule:
Free Education (country had one of the highest literacy rates in Africa)
Free Health Care (if they couldn't perform the procedure in country, the govt paid to have you flown to a country where the procedure could be done)
Yearly oil stipend to every citizen of Libya
$50,000 wedding gift to anyone who got married.
Largest aqueduct agricultural project in Africa, he literally turned the deserts green.
And just so you know, one of the primary reasons the west went in to take him out is that he refused to accept dollars for Libyan oil anymore, requiring gold instead as payment. The international banking cartels could not stand for that.
Libya enjoys large natural resources,[49] which Gaddafi utilized to help develop the country. Under Gaddafi's Jamahiriya "direct democracy" state,[47] the country's literacy rate rose from 10% to 90%, life expectancy rose from 57 to 77 years, equal rights were established for women and black people, employment opportunities were established for migrant workers, and welfare systems were introduced that allowed access to free education, free healthcare, and financial assistance for housing.[50] In addition, financial support was provided for university scholarships and employment programs.[51] Gaddafi also initiated development of the Great Manmade River,[50] in order to allow free access to fresh water across large parts of the country.[50] The country was developed without taking any foreign loans, and, as a result, Libya was debt-free.[14]
Libyans have described the Great Manmade River, a project initiated by Gaddafi, as the "Eighth Wonder of the World".[60] The Great Manmade River also holds the record as the world's largest irrigation project.[61] Gaddafi also initiated the Libyan National Telescope Project, costing about 10 million euros.[62]

Hi everyone,
Great commentary here. A lot to be learned.
I just want to chime in on Gadaffi - very important point you made there. We must stop thinking in binary fashion - i.e. was he "good" or "bad" ?
I was intrigued by his death, after I recently came across this video:
which piqued my interest greatly. Yesterday, I googled him for more info and was surprised to find many and more of the claims in the video substantiated in wikipedia

I am somewhat of a self educated finance head (zerohedge!) and what struck me as TRUTH instantly was the significance of Libya being a debt-free country that produced SOUND MONEY not FIAT money (ohh how we HATE that!), one of the top oil producing nations, a vital supplier of oil to Europe (especially Italy), the largest FRESH water supply in Africa, and most damning of all - Gaddaffi's desire to create a gold backed dinar, an African Union, and to start trading oil in that new, gold-backed currency.
This is exactly what Saddam Hussein wanted to do before we took him out for WMDs (what a joke that was, eh?)
Good, bad, I don't know. As humans go, probably both and as politicians do, extreme ends of the spectrum at times. Was he eccentric, certainly. Did he accomplish great things for his country as a whole? Apparently so. I would love a $50,000 handout when I get married. Check out his amazonian guards:

Anyone interested in geopolitics and America's role (especially CIA involvement) in overthrowing many, many freely elected leaders check out the excellent book "Killing Hope" by William Blum.
What you will find is that this has happened, many, many times in the past... and I believe, the current events today are the plans outlined in PNAC (Project for a New American CenturY) turning, rolling forward... it's all planned IMHO. There are no mistakes. There are no "reactionary measures." WE (USA) are the belligerents, we impose sanctions, through NATO enforce no fly zones, and as always, fund the rebel group today turned terrorist group tomorrow of the day with weapons, munitions, and logistical support.
Several half billion dollar+ oil contracts are already spoken for in Libya by our oil companies.
One of the first things the Transitional National Council of Libya (the "ragtag rebel group..") did was create a Central Bank. If ever there was a red flag that something more is going on, that some shadowy arm is exerting its will...

...Moving forward, my Administration will interpret and implement the provisions described below in a manner that best preserves the flexibility on which our safety depends and upholds the values on which this country was founded....
...Moreover, I want to clarify that my Administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a Nation. My Administration will interpret section 1021 in a manner that ensures that any detention it authorizes complies with the Constitution, the laws of war, and all other applicable law...
...While section 1022 is unnecessary and has the potential to create uncertainty, I have signed the bill because I believe that this section can be interpreted and applied in a manner that avoids undue harm to our current operations....
