DIY Seperatory Funnel

I've recently come across the idea of using a bottle of dish soap as a separatory funnel, basically just turning it upside down and pulling the lid up and down to drain liquids through it. I was wondering what anybody thought about this idea. I am eager to start the xtract but I don't want to screw it up by being over eager.

Also, I know how nice a real separatory funnel would be and I have been looking around to find one, but I would like to know any other good chemical/extraction processes I could use it for, and I have my ACRB all ready for extraction so I don't want to wait on shipping a funnel. If I get one, I would like to purchase one in person offline, not through the internet, so does anyone have any suggestions of the stores or types of stores I can get it from? Any input would be great.

I have used a plastic transparent sportdrink bottle. Probably the same mechanism as a dish soap bottle. It works like a charm!

I also used a syringe whithout a needle. Made a plastic flexible tube on it of 40cm or something. These tubes they use for fishtanks. This I used to get the solvent of the mixture. And thew bottle I used to get rid of the water/mhbr.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about using a plastic bottle because I don't know the rating, but I feel like it would be kind of difficult to try and use a glass turkey baster because you have squeeze different pressures and worry about leaks and whatnot. I've never used one so I'm making that up, but I always want to be as efficient as possible and not waste material or time. Thanks for the advice.

You could also check second hand sites.
Often new ones are offered there, I got mine from there.

At this moment there is a good offer on the main dutch second-hand site 3 * 2000ml ones new (i'm not related to the person selling, just saw it some time ago).
It's nice to have a big volume one for bigger extractions. I don't know if you're dutch but if so you could check it out.

The little squeeze part might not be ideal. You ideally want a stopcock. As the bottle is squeezed and released it will create back flow and ebulation leading to solvent and water layer mixing. Could cause emulsions. Also you won't be able to get it as separated as with a seperatory funnel. For a rough separation, sure.

I would do the mixture in a hdpe jerrycan (lemnonade/milk etc). Then you separate the solvent with the syringe with tube. You do this till you are done. Then to separate the water from the solvent you use a plastic sportdrink bottle cut open at the bottom. You pour the solvent in through the open end. You open the capswitch for as long as needed. Et voila!

Ofcourse a glass separatory funnel is better. But this can be expensive and difficult to get a hand on.

I had the most beautiful cylindrical pyrex 2L sep funnel I've ever laid my eyes on. I bought it second hand around 12 years ago, while I was still in high school. This was intended to be used in my first DMT venture, but now I'm unsure if I actually ended up using it. Anyway, it was a prized possession, one which found itself gaining additional uses for as times went on. Then, sadly, and just recently, some police were at my house for a non-criminal call. While I was out of the room, they snooped around my place and found the 2L sep funnel - which wasn't really hidden, but left out to dry. Now, I was asked to step outside for questioning, and while there, I heard lots of glass smashing occurring in my garage. I was wondering wtf they could be doing in there. When I later checked, they had smashed my 2L sep funnel, as well as a few beakers. For what? I don't know. I was not charged with anything. I have to believe that what they did was entirely illegal, but simpletons such as those on the force live in a bubble and have one dimensional views of life. To them, glassware means criminal activity - never mind that it makes up an insignificant percentage of all scientific applications for lab ware. They didn't even ask me what I was doing with it. They simply smashed it while I was out of the house, then left, as if nothing had happened.

The moral depravity and lack of astuteness of your typical officer is completely reprehensible.

auction site for about 30 USD, on average. people spend more on root bark and cactus.

Well yeah it is all relative. 30usd is in one context a lot of money and in the other context nothing. When I did my first extraction it was not priority to have the best equipment. You just want to do it. When you want to do it more often the luxury of the funnels are tempting. And not in every country it is easy to get your hands on one. Besides that how do you know what the age is of the people on this forum haha...

Those are probably really cheap/thin glass, won't withstand extreme temperatures without snapping, and will chip/break unless handled like a baby. I speak from experience. Put one in the freezer for a tip, when I took it out, the tip and faucet snapper right off without being under notable pressure. God I miss my 2L Pyrex cylindrical funnel so, so much. It was a motherfucking gem of a gem.
