DMT doesnt smell the same after evap

Hey guys, i'm trying to get some chunky white crystals, so i extracted from 100g of mimosa hostilis, i freeze precipitated it, re-boiled it with activated charcoal for a while to get it fairly white (i think there is still trace amount of charcoal left in there, so next time i will use higher grade filters)
after the first freeze precip, it had the signature DMT smell to it, but now after re-ex it doesnt seem to, instead it seems to have a very feint grease-like smell
after the first re-ex i took a few flakes off and re-dissolved it in hot naptha (much more dilute this time), and dropped the flakes in once it cooled as a seed, i now have it sitting somewhere with about 90% of the opening covered up to control the evaporation rate (which is now approximately 10-15ml/day) in an attempt to get quartz-like crystals

my question is about the smell; is it normal for it to loose the new-shoes like smell once you re-x it? is it the impurities that give it that smell? or have i ruined my product somehow

another thing i am curious about is re-x using heptane, as i understand, at around room temperature, dmt is very insoluble in heptane, which might make a slow evap for the purpose of larger crystals quite difficult, does anyone have any guidance on that?

Really pure DMT is practically odorless. Pure enough to be very happy with (a bit subjective, I know!) smells sweetish and faintly floral. Increasing levels of impurity proceed through jasmine to "new sneakers" and then it gets more complicated - ranging from more plasticky to mothballs to fecal, which depends on the nature of the impurities.

So, it smelling faintly greasy may in fact be a good sign. Smell is, in all but a very few cultures, something that is rather subjective and hard to describe except in terms of the smells of other, similar things. With any luck, the greasy smell should also dissipate as the last remnants of naphtha evaporate (although that becomes a moot point for the time being seeing as you've redissolved the product in more naphtha)

at around room temperature, dmt is very insoluble in heptane

"Very insoluble" is a huge overstatement, to the extent of being downright wrong. DMT displays some solubility at room temperature. Producing large crystals from slow evaporation of a heptane solution should be fine. Just be sure to use enough heptane at first such that the DMT remains (but only just) completely dissolved at room temperature. Fire safety and personal security become the main issues when a more-or-less open container of highly flammable liquid (with a substance that is strictly controlled in most jurisdictions dissolved in it) is hanging around for a couple of weeks - because it should take that long if you want to get really nice crystals.

Oh very cool, i don't mind the less pure stuff, i'm just doing this crystallization for fun really, and also i think it would be more discreet in vape juice
i'm just leaving the container in a wardrobe
Actually looking at it today, the crystals are very nice, first re-ex it was more concentrated, but this time i tried to use approx 90ml/gr or maybe a little less so it would crystallize slowly as it evaporates

already even after only one day and about 10ml evaporated i'm already seeing these really nice looking chunky crystals looking like rock salt... cant wait to see it in a few weeks, i think also maybe how fast it's developing means maybe i needed a little more solvent so it doesnt start off as a super solution

Here's another pull i did seperately, just did this to get some while im waiting weeks for the other lot to turn out, used heptane and evaporating it, but it doesnt seem to make a huge difference vs naptha

actually, now that it has finished the evap, it still has the distinctive DMT smell, i wonder why this one does and the last batch didnt, strange

Yeah, once you've played around in the chemistry lab with DMT for a while you'll notice it seems to have mind of its own! The contaminants responsible for what we recognise as the DMT smell, which are breakdown products from the DMT molecule, have a very low odour threshold. It would take some very precise experimentation to work out why they sometimes start accumulating sooner than at other times. Moisture levels and traces of base or even dust particles (micrometerites?! :lol: ) will influence the rate of decomposition.

Just wondering, i guess i never noticed before, because until now, i bought DM from someone else, and it seemed like a dry, hard crystal consistency, but now, this white stuff from the last pic was extremely wax-like, the crystals felt fairly soft and melted like wax under just warm water- is this normal?

Waxiness is totally normal. Maybe your crystals from the slow evap will be somewhat harder - it will be interesting to find out.

DMT has at least two polymorphs depending on the crystallisation conditions - solvent, temperature, rate of formation, position of the planets... :lol:

In all likelihood your crystals contained a higher amount of residual occluded naphtha than some, causing them to melt more readily than you might expect; the polymorph melting at 46°C does so at a temperature which to most people is on the borderline of uncomfortably hot.

i noticed that when using it; it seems to not act as normal dmt like when i've bought it, it burns(as in, smoke etc) if i turn the heat too high, it's harder to mix it in (i use vape juice), and tastes kinda like waxy, and another effect which may or may not be happening is it's causing fluid to build in my arms (though im not sure if i'm just psyching myself into thinking this one)... i think maybe, unfortunately this batch might have to be thrown (since i dissolved the whole batch into vape juice)... maybe next time i gotta just use the freeze precip.
it does have psycho effects, but i cant use enough before i get really conscious about my arms looking like balloons to keep going (again, i'm not even sure if my arms have changed, it might just be a psych effect)- unless anyone has some knowledge related

so ijust did some of the homemade stuff, i used a "machine" and noticed that the effect was much different than expected. i tried vaporizing 25mg to begin with- felt absolutely nothing, nothing like the normal dmt effect. upped it to 80mg- did not feel the normal dmt effect (where Swim just gets zonked), but i had a open eye hallucination that was incredible- i was looking at my hand, it was changing constantly- the fingers got very thin, normal, the arrangement changed, aged, bone structure changed, contantly changing, and it was real as day, it was incredible- i did not have any hyperspace like effects like normal, i did not have my normal "zonking".. really incredible but also makes me think i must have messed something up.
i did another hit of approximately the same dose. i didnt have time to enjoy the effects because i noticed an incredible "bloating" of my upper body and arms, a great amount of fluid built up. i made sure to take pictures to make sure it was actually real and to review it late- and i rushed to the bathroom to look in the mirror; and on review, i definately had a very noticable "balooning" of my upper body- dafuq is going on; seems very unsafe to keep using this home made shit until i find out what has happened- does anybody have any ideas?

i believe the stuff i had before was safer because it had the intended DMT effect, i bought it from someone who has been extracting for years, and i didnt get a terrifying bloat of my upper body (bruh, it looked like i had female breasts a little). scary

I like DMT because it has a short onset, and short effect, i use it just because i like to experiment with having my state of mind altered, my perceptions altered, and to see things that arent there- don't give me the "you're not spiritual" crap, i enjoy it in my own way

If your genetic profile is one that limits your body fat, abs can still be visible and one can be unfit (low strength, endurance, stamina, etc.) So I guess to repose the question, how and what do you eat and what kind of exercise regimen do you have? What other drugs do you do, how often, etc? All things that can have effects on your experience.

I'm not gonna lie though, that sounds like one wildly weird experience!

If I may, df0 only asked what your motivations are, a pretty harmless question, yet you seem rather defensive in your response. May I be informed as to why? Are you questioning the nature of your motivation deep down?

Sorry, my response wasn't directed at him in particular, i've had talks with other DMT users before, many of them have this cult like mentality that you have to be a spiritual person, and have spiritual motivations for using it, and that smoking dmt takes you into a supernatural spirit world, otherwise you're doing the wrong thing(like, literally the majority of them seem to have this opinion), i guess whenever i see the question now, it seems like a loaded question, as if they are expecting spiritual answers.

Well, yeah, you can be skinny and have abs, but i said i'm fit and my abdominals are visible too, i wasn't saying i'm fit because my abdominals are visible. i work out 5-6 days a week lifting, and i do interval training for cardio 3x a week too. my diet is quite good. i eat very little junk food, i don't eat meat (which people will have their own opinions on whether that consitutes healthy, but it is) bruh i feel like i am doxxing myself right now haha

I respect and understand that. I can't speak for df0, but personally, I wouldn't have any expectation about your response, but just hope that it's well intentioned . Don't know if you've ever heard about the hyperslap (if not, it's all over the forum), but that's usually of concern with "misplaced" intentions. However, I nevertheless have no judgements one way or another, just a hope for the best.

Gotcha, your dash in the sentence caused me to infer that as a justification for being fit and not as an add on. That's what I get for reading too much logic bahaha.

Do you have any fitness goals you're pursuing at the moment? Myself, I am trying to get back to where I was. I used to compete powerlifting until injuring my back using the belt that I never use (was allowed that for an upcoming competition at the time). So I'm mainly hypertrophy training and powerlifting. And as long as you're getting essential aminos, then you should be fine eating a vegetarian diet.

I also injured my back, so my fitness goals are kind of on the back burner until i get surgery to fix it, so for now i'm doing as much as i can. long term i would like to get back into cycling and improve my times from 5 years ago (when i was alot skinnier, and into cycling), but i also dont want to be so skinny haha
Overall, i want to look good and be fit and healthy.

Just to re-confirm, you took photos of this effect and viewed then while in a completely baseline state and this is what you saw? Did you compare them side-by-side with other photos taken at times when you appeared to be your normal self? I'm only asking to be sure you weren't tricking yourself.
