DMT for the Masses Question

I am not entirely sure if this has been answered yet, but I have been searching with no success to find anything similar to my situational question. I have decided to try the DMT for the Masses technique from the book itself. I had already purchased everything needed before hearing about this website, otherwise I would have used another technique that does not require Petroleum Ether.

My question is regarding that, Petroleum Ether. I plan on setting up my lab in a closet and am worried that the Petroleum Ether will need ventilation. I want to do this properly, safely so if its needed I would have no problem putting this project on hold until I can build a vent system.

Will this technique produce enough harmful vapors that its necessary to keep proper ventilation, as well as any other precautions I should take while using the Ether, and quite possible the Lye. I apologize if this is listed somewhere in a FAQ, I just couldnt really find any information on this particular Tek and assume its just a very old, outdated, irrelevant method that others have found safer/better methods making this irrelevant.

Indeed I would strongly recommend either building a fume hood, or working with solvents outdoors. The vapors are sufficiently toxic to cause brain damage even at relatively low concentrations, and depending on how frequently you are exposed to them, you'd want to definitely take measures to prevent the inhalation of those vapors by any living being.

Oh my I am so glad I asked the question. I did not think outdoors would be viable, I'm in Florida it's very hot and humid and tons of bugs. I'd imagine the ether would either explode or I'd have super toxic mosquitos that infect people with DMT. xD

Hello, welcome.
Here's a quick point of clarification - Petroleum ether is not the same as diethyl ether. The explosion risk from the latter is, overall, far greater for the most part - although that's not saying one should be complacent with the former by any means.

The possibility of confusion between these two sorts of ether means that the term 'naphtha' is much preferred over 'petroleum ether'. [The very same stuff also comes with the possibility of confusing 'benzine' with 'benzene' - nomenclature can be such a hoot!]

The main neurotoxic component of aliphatic naphtha is n-hexane, but the content of this compound is often limited to <5% in products for general sale. Check the SDS for the product that you have.

Lye + naphtha is still very much a mainstay of extraction techniques, even though other methods have been developed. Have you checked our wiki for information about refinements to these extraction methods, along with safety information? The other main concern is to ALWAYS WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION when handling corrosive substances!

I was also wondering how big your closet is, because having enough room to work is a further safety consideration.

One further footnote "DMT for the masses", also commonly known as "Noman's Tek", included an ammonia wash step which (as the instructions on the wiki point out) should no longer be included as it was frequently reported as causing losses.

Label on the Ether I got is from Alliance Chemical, PETROLEUM ETHER, ACS. It doesn't really have many more identifiers other then a Lot analysis I assume is a lab test. color 1, spec gravity 0.6384, res. after evap <1 ppm, appearance clear, acidity resides neutral, sulfur <1 ppm, benzene(GC)<1ppm, doctor test negative. I assume this is Petroleum Ether, as thats what the label indicates. It does not mention n-hexane anywhere on the bottle/label/amazonlisting. Am I able to call this ether, Naptha?

As for the Closet and fume hood, I think I will use kitchen as recommended. I had misread when I read the manual months ago and had it in my mind that the process required 3 days of fuming, not the 3 hours it actually says in the manual. So will I still need the hood or can I make due with just being careful while in this phase?

After realizing my mistake Im going to slow down, take the time to look through the wiki and learn some more before initiating the experiment. And thank you all for the input, safety > success .

Yes, it would be far better to refer to it as naphtha. Do you know its boiling range? The density is exactly that of heptane - a good sign - but could also correspond to a mixture of C₅ - C₈ alkanes.

So, it seems to be a mixture of lighter hydrocarbons that, by a remarkable coincidence, happens to be the same density as n-heptane but without being n-heptane.

It will work, but the low boiling point may cause annoyance on account of rapid evaporation - unless, perhaps, some of the data is wrong and it's n-heptane (b.p. 98°C).

Look online for a SDS where there ought to be accurate information.
