dmt n-oxide and zinc powder question...

Migrated topic.

hi,

swim starts his acid soak of MHRB with water made ph 3 by hydrochloric acid. after 3 soaks and filtration/fridge decanting is complete, the ph of his acidic solution has risen to about 5.3. is this ph too high to correctly perform the conversion of dmt n-oxide to nn-dmt using zinc powder? swim had read the ph is supposed to be 3 during the conversion process. is it necessary to add more hydrochloric acid to bring the ph back down?

thanks

You could add more HCl, or you could simply add vinegar. The reaction will proceed with DMT N-oxide dissolved in household white vinegar (pH of 5% acetic acid: 2.4), and that's usually easier to acquire and handle than concentrated HCl. So I'd imagine that it would work fine with MHRB soaked in HCl + vinegar solution as long as the pH was brought back down to about 3.
