"I would never ingest something that hasn't been around long enough to know if it’s safe or not."
Everything has to start somewhere, and acid was a research chemical not too long ago as well. If everyone had that sort of outlook, acid wouldn't be in existence, we never would have tested the first cacti, fungus, vine or seed for their benefits. I might even argue that purity-wise, some of these RC's are much cleaner than any LSD or MDMA (or what have you) you could pick up off the streets (as they are typically tested for quality and purity at multiple steps along the production chain - something not necessarily guaranteed from a clandestine lab).
That being said, I have read a
report on erowid about the possible harmful effects that 2C-I can have on the thyroid. The claims aren't backed up by much, but it claims that iodine, a very heavy atom is not commonly used in pharmaceuticals except in those which help to regulate the thyroid. If anyone can provide any insight into whether or not those claims hold any truth to them, i'd love to hear it, because right now it's just un-sourced gossip to me.
Being as the 2C's are structurally quite similar to mescaline, and looking at their structure, is there any reason, aside from them not being officially tested on humans, to believe that they pose any real serious danger in the long and/or short term? They have been around for some years now, and there are quite a few people out there testing these things every day. Every single one of them was tested by Shulgin himself, and he's in his 80's now. Most of the negative reports which I have read are a result of ignorance in terms of dosage or administration route. I mean, the reason Shulgin didn't overdose and die over the course of synthesizing all of these chemicals is because he treated them with the same sort of respect that many users on the boards give to established psychedelics like cacti or DMT. The reason there are so many negative reports is because people look at them as though they are a party drug, and a second-rate psychedelic, when in reality they require the same level of caution and respect, they too are a natural product of the earth, fruits of human ingenuity, and modified reflections of the natural world seen through the eyes of humans.
