Downstem convection pipe with Airstones

So I have been trying to come up with a good way to smoke freebase. I definitely don't want to spend money on a GVG at the moment.

I bought these marina airstones at a local pet store for 80 Cents I am a little apprehensive to apply a flame and inhale these things.

I have Allen old bong with a pretty neat downstem, and wondering if this is a good way to smoke the spice.

What I did is I placed some steel wool mesh in between 2 screens and pushed it to the bottom of the flared opening, which was a perfect fit I might add.

In the center is a bigger wad of steel wool mesh and the plug is essentially the air stone.

I got some aluminum tape or whatever the name is and put a thin layer around the stone so it is a snug fit.

I then will put the downstem in my bong and then use the bong leveled like you would "The Machine", so the spice won't drop into the bottom mesh screens.

Will this be an effective way to smoke the freebase?
I read somewhere that putting water in a bong will destroy the DMT, and a few others say it works great with water.

Any modification advice will be appreciated

Why bother with the airstone? I have had good luck with a mesh sandwich in the stem/bowl.

Just put your DMT on the bottom mesh disk/plug & form a second one to fit in the bowl over top of that as a heat sink.

You mean the Wad of steel wool, or under that on the steel screens? If its the latter, wouldn't the DMT drip from the screen into the bowl? And then just hover a lighter over the wad of steel wool and have the hot air pass through?

Don't forget to burn everything before using it to smoke..
If the stem is long enough, try using it as you describeb but without the bong, inhale directly through it or extend it a bit if possible..

Hope you checked that airstone, some of them 'stones' are made of plastic.
