Entheogenesis Australis - 4 Day Outdoor Conference Gathering - Fri 6th to Mon 9th Nov 2009

Entheogenesis Australis (EGA) is a not-for-profit association that exists to create a supportive environment to foster mature, open discussion about psychoactive plants and chemicals. EGA hosts an annual conference to encourage informed dialogue on the role of such sacraments in culture, history, spirituality, art and sciences. EGA addresses many of the myths surrounding psychoactive chemicals and also examines aspects of safety, harm reduction, psychology and the law within an Australian context.

EGA 2009 will create a space for growth of the spirit, mind and body, hosting over 25 expert speakers from around Australia and abroad. The speakers make up the backbone of our event and are supported by a great host of other fantastic happenings including discussion panels/groups, workshops and performances. This will take place over 4 days in November nestled in the beautiful Strathbogie Ranges in north east Victoria, Australia.

Our aspiration is to create an active, transformative experience and cultivate a community ethos and feel, through the synergy of science, art, and ritual. We aim to create inspiring spaces that reflect and resonate with the overall philosophy of the event. The main conference space will be a work of art in its own right. Accompanying it will be the ~Mykopod~ space designed to help you 'relax ~ connect ~ integrate' during the gathering. To additionally help you tune in and play your part in the EGA experience, there will also be a healing tent, meditative crystal mandala dome and a visionary art space all connected by a very lush market area.

The event will also host a communal banquet, some ambient music and films as well as Masquerade Corroboree to keep you all on your toes.

We hope you can join us in the trees for an exploration of more than mind, body and spirit.

EGA 2009 Program

Bear (Owsley) Stanley
Talk 1 - 'The economic consequences of black markets, specifically in reference to drug prohibition'.

Talk 2 - 'The effects of certain psychedelics on mind function, including interactions with electronic circuits- a possible route to mental machine control'

"By conservative estimates, Bear Research Group made more than 1.25 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967, essentially seeding the entire modern psychedelic movement" - Joel Selvin

Bio
Considered by many as one of the legends of the sixties counterculture, Bear Stanley denies his heroic status, and spends his days working on various sculptures and writing essays on subjects such as the importance of carbon dioxide, the primary and only ‘plant food’, to the expansion of food crops and life on earth. Fair and equitable taxation (equal and low percentage on all ‘income), a proper runoff method to determine the results of elections, and how to unify and balance lawmaking. Writing laws in ordinary language rather than legalese. Including ‘sunset clauses’ to allow change to adjust to the rapid changes in today’s world-- amongst others. He is renowned for his contribution to sound engineering, particularly working with live gig iconoclasts, the Grateful Dead, and perfecting the idea of on-stage monitors and high quality PA’s. A tireless archivist, he kept a ‘diary’ of his front-of-house mixes, including hundreds of Grateful Dead performances, and has seen the release of a number of albums from his “sonic journal” tapes of PA mixes. Bear was a minor participant in the Acid Tests of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. He was the first underground cook to produce high-purity LSD in the 1960s, when it was legal, including the famous White Lightning and Monterey Purple. Bear Stanley now lives in Australia.

Robert Jesse
Talk 1 - 'Psilocybin and Spirituality:Notes from the Johns Hopkins Study'

Talk 2 -'(Entheogens), Awakening, and Spiritual Development'

Bio
Bob Jesse is organizer of the Council on Spiritual Practices (csp.org/about), which aims to shift modernity's awareness and practices with respect to primary religious experience (csp.org/PRE). CSP also encourages people to imagine and develop social contexts to contain such experiences and help them yield lasting benefit.

Through CSP, Bob and his colleagues initiated a study, conducted at Johns Hopkins (Psilocybin Research) and reported around the world, of the psychospiritual effects of psilocybin in healthy volunteers (csp.org/psilocybin). This expands the emphasis in hallucinogen research beyond the medical treatment of ill people to include the betterment of well people, contributing to a science of pro-social development.

On his home front, Bob is co-founder of a spiritual community formed around ecstatic dance. His formal training is in engineering and lives in San Francisco.

*** Discussion Panels ***

Facilitator by Rak Razam - Spirits Of The Vine, Leaf & Flower
Join passionate plant heads sharing their experiences with psychoactive plants and their relationship to the Gaian matrix. Behind the chemistry are there active intelligences in the plant world, and if so how do we best interact with them? How can reclaiming our human-vegetal partnership help us become a sustainable culture?

* Why do we need to connect to the plant world?
* If plants can be teachers, can humans be students?
* What is our historical and bio-chemical relationship with plants?
* What does Nature have to teach us?
* What is the Australian plant kingdom’s place in the global entheo blossoming?

Facilitator by Rak Razam - REC-CHEMS: Language of the gods?
Pharmauscas glossalize and tantalize in their quest for the divine spark. What are ”rec-chems”, the thousands of new wave chemical compounds catalogued by bio-chemist Alexander Shulgin and others? What pathways do these compounds open up, and what do these keys say about the architecture of consciousness itself? Are rec-chems a neurochemical language of the divine, a “Neurobet” spoken only by a new wave of psychonautical translinguists?

* Is better living through chemistry possible, and what potentials does it offer us individually and as a species?
* What new maps of hyperspace do rec-chems open up?
* If rec-chems were integrated by society at large, would we be medicated or augmented? What are the dangers?
* Are rec-chems catalysts to transhumanity?

Facilitator by Rak Razam - Psy-Tribes: Entheogenic Communities Past, Present And Future
Is a psychedelic community merely a state of mind? Can meaningful change be manifested in the material world by an activated collective? From Elesius to the Haight Asbury, illuminated communities have pointed the way, but what would a 21st century psychedelic community be like? How do emerging technologies and sustainability dovetail with a psychedelic future?

* What models for psychedelic community both living existing, past and potential (tribes, kibbutzes, communes etc) can we draw upon?
* What is the correct place for a workable entheogen at the core of the tribe?
* What went right and what went wrong in the 60s-70s back to the earth movement?
* Is a psychedelic sustainable community the much needed step forward?

Facilitator by Julian Raxworthy - You had to be there - Psychedelia, Representation.
Its hard to describe the psychedelic experience, because, really, you had to be there, but lots of people have tried to. Accompanied by amazing images of mind bending artwork, Julian will introduce this panel with an overview about how psychedelia represents itself in literature, but particularly in art.

Facilitator by Neil Pike - The Unbroken Chain: A Hidden History of the International Drug Trade
The British Empire was founded on the back of the opium trade and to this day the trade in so-called licit and illicit drugs is one of the largest money spinners in the world. With the 20th century adoption of the US "war on drugs" model, the trade in opium became an even larger source of money and as the sun set on the British Empire it dawned on the American one. Since WW2, opium production has faithfully traced a geographical trail of US political hotspots and military engagements from Asia to Afghanistan. A simple equation of guns for drugs has allowed dictators to flourish, illegal wars to be fought and huge profits to be netted. Paranoid as it may sound, the main orchestrators and beneficiaries of this seem to have been the CIA. In the last 40 years, other drugs have also been the basis for empire - cocaine, amphetamines, marijuana, and even good old LSD. At the heart of these empires has always been a consortium of career criminals, corrupt cops and shadowy intelligence operatives. From the CIA-funded opium armies in Laos to Ron Stark helping to flood the world with acid, from Nugan Hand to Mark Standen, this panel will examine this history.

Altered states of consciousness have long been a fundamental part of human culture, and as our world becomes increasingly fast-paced, alternative modes are becoming ever more significant and consciously explored.
The Entheogenesis Australis 2009 Symposium aims to address the issues relating to drug use/misuse from social, cultural and historical/traditional perspectives. EGA speakers will draw on the backgrounds of physiology, biology, pharmacology, psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, botany and more to provide a more realistic context to the role drugs and altered states play in the modern world.

If you’ve ever asked yourself “has the ‘War on Drugs’ created more problems than it tried to solve?” or “is MDMA really a more dangerous drug than alcohol?” - then EGA is for you.

Entheogenesis Australis is a collection of thinkers from all walks of life, we come together to share knowledge about sacred plants, chemical alchemy and states of consciousness.

This year EGA will be hosting 2 international headliners and a large host of this country’s most informed enthneogenic minds as well as upsizing our multimedia and the event as a whole.

So dose this mean I can watch what happens at the event on the net? So much going on with my life at the moment, that keeps me from going! It would be a sweet gathering. I am sure many people that go to Entheogenesise would know about spice, and take spice!

Ill be there next Thursday evening. EGA rocks.

for those of us on the other side of the planet, how how how do we get....videos, recordings, live feeds, some kind of media from this event? I have no idea. Is it too much to ask for you to secretly record each lecture and discussion and then upload it for everyone? :)
