Filtering Red Junk

Quick question..

SWIM has been doing STB and has to be very careful decanting the naptha out of his milk jug so that none of the base gets pulled with it.

Could SWIM filter the naptha through a coffee filter to catch any of the extra base?.. This would make things a lot easier. Would this also filter out the plant fats?.. I want to be able to keep the fats, but don't want any of the base.

A coffee filter won't collect all of the base. Sprinkle a pinch of sodium carbonate into the naptha, swirl a bit and then pass through coffee filter and you will be good.

Sodium carbonate = baking soda, correct? Can you use too much?.. Will the spice turn out any different?.. and can you re-use the naptha afterwords?

So SWIM should pull naptha into jar, then mix sodium carbonate, strain through coffee filter into new jar, and then freeze precip? Will he still get the plant fats?

Sorry for the noob questions.

Sodium carbonate = washing soda. You can make it from baking soda, instructions in this thread or in the Handbook.

The spice will come out the same, with all the fats and oils you pulled as well. The steps you described sound exactly like how SWIM does it.

Always glad to help!

Interesting.. So precisely what is it that sodium carbonate does when mixed with the naptha?

Is the naptha reusable?

The sodium carbonate acts to neutralize the base, while keeping the DMT in freebase form. Here's a longer discussion of why it works when sodium bicarbonate does not.

The sodium carbonate will remain solid in the naptha, so after you filter it (the naptha, don't reuse the washing soda) can be reused. Some oils will not freeze precipitate, so if you are using warm naptha, it will progressively pull less and less as it saturates. That said, SWIM still uses naptha from the first can she purchased with good results.

Edit: the thread pointed to suggests adding water and washing soda to the naptha. when SWIM first started extracting, she would do this and it significantly lowered her yields. The washing soda works just fine added directly to the naptha without any water.
