Freeze Precip/ crystals not sticking to glass

I've had 3 pulls worth of naphtha freeze precipitating in my freezer at the coldest setting for 3 days now and the crystals don't seem to be sticking to the glass as is often shown. Anyone have any advice for me in this situation?

That's fine. I have a Buchner funnel and filters. I scrape the crystals loose anyway and stir the solvent up. Then I pour the freezing naphtha through a filter, all the DMT is trapped in the filter.

You could use a coffee filter (put it in the freezer and then work with it quickly), pour the solvent through it, it will trap the DMT. scrape the DMT from the filter. But make sure you work with everything while it's nice and cold.

You could also carefully pour the solvent out, the DMT will sink and stick within the confines of the jar.

How much MHRB material were working with to start and what volumes . In other words what did you do ?

like ghostman said, just pour the whole thing through a coffee filter while its still cold, and your crystals should stay on top of the filter... Remember to reuse the naphtha, dont throw it away (or if there' s no more pulls to be done, then evap this naphtha down after the filtering, to see if there is anything more in it.

I used a pound of prepowdered mhrb mixed with a pound of lye and around 3000mls of water and about 3-400ml of naphtha for each pull. Thanks ghostman, it had occurred to me that I might try filtering but I'd rather take the side of caution, mhrb is too expensive for small mistakes. Thanks again all.

SWIM crystals arent sticking to the walls of the glass. SWIM tried filtering but he/she couldnt take any spice out of the filter. :(

SWIM has the doubt this crystals he/she sees are DMT crystals.


Here is a photo SWIM gave me.SWIM used 200g of MHRB. 40ml naptha pull.

Swim was having the same problem. The problem was being too impatient. If swiy's crystals are not sticking to the glass then swiy needs to leave it in the freezer for 7+ days.
By the 4th and 5th day swiy will witness crystals clunked together very closely to the bottom of the jar. Be very careful not to shake the jar and disrupt the crystals that are trying to settle to the bottom.
Around the 7th day, the crystals should have made contact with the bottom of the glass and become stuck.
Swiy should be able to pour out the solvent and flip the jar upside down before drying.

Swim has no idea why this happens but swim think it's because swim used Ca(OH)² a long time ago and then switched to NaOH but...by extracting and freezing a pull everyday, swiy'll be able to extract and dry crystals everyday by the end of the week.


If swiy does not want to wait the 7 days swiy could always just buy Dry Ice or Liquid Nitrogen. This will definitely speed up the process. The colder the Naptha gets, the faster the crystals will sink.
That or buy a freezer that can freeze ice-cream rock solid.

Do not put dry ice inside your freezer.
You will break it. (Most freezers have a thermostat that will break if an extreme temperature is reached.)

Swiy could also try the filter option. Trying to keep everything cold while filtering out the crystals. Swim had mild success with this method. Even trying to stick a fan inside the freezer but...the crystals always come out pudgy and it's rare for swim to get them truly dry and flakey this way..
