Got Sneakers?

Migrated topic.

Here's another from the (I hope) No Such Thing As Stupid Questions department.

The new sneaker/flowers aroma of Tek results: is it to be trusted? I've searched for the term here and found an odd comment or two, and of course have read it elsewhere including at the end of the Cybs Salt Tek that I recently followed.

I ask only because I have also heard elsewhere that fully clean DMT should not have any of this smell associated with it. I note that after I did a partial Re-X, the solvent jar in which I was keeping my previously-used naphtha (Ronsonol) smelled exactly like this after pouring it out. Is this wholly due to the lingering DMT residue or is it an aromatic property of the fluid itself?

I've left my entire .6 g out to dry now for several days, and the odor has lessened a bit. So I'm wondering about any small NPS residue that may still be there deep in the crystals, and whether they are safe to vape!

Thanks to everyone for everything.

A lot of people have said it smells like new sneakers. I think new sneakers generally smell weird and kind of gross (and mothballs are far worse)... DMT smells floral and kind of indolic to me. Loved the smell even before I tried it, not an acquired preference.

The residue in a solvent jar could smell strongly of DMT if the naphtha had already evaporated completely. Otherwise it would smell strongly of naphtha.

I generally check smells by putting the material in a sealed container and then checking it hours/days later. Anything volatile will accumulate this way.

I've never had the issue of large amounts of solvent "deep in the crystal", but grinding it up would probably release fluid inclusions if that was the case. It will probably degrade a bit more quickly when ground though.

RoundAbout - thanks so much for this, it really helps. My own clumsy phrase "deep in the crystals" is exactly that: unscientific and therefore likely inaccurate. I'd already had everything in a glass jar for about a week when I started to get suspicious of the smell. You've helped put my mind at ease, and I'm grateful.

DMT smell... I remember rhe first time I got a whiff of it. And all the subsequent times the smell seemed to change depending on the purity and age of the cheese. But never like new sneakers!

Nonetheless it always had a smell. I wouldn't leave it out in the air unless you plan to use it up quickly—I keep mine on ice.

It does have a smell; even if "completely" clean : the dmt itself smells. If you are concerned you could clean it further by redissolving in acid h20, pulling with clean NPS (a different NPS if this is a concern) and then freezing out or evaporating. This should be done with a mininimal amount of solution so it is less tedious, more effective, and less wasteful. You could also end on a basic (instead of acidic) water solution and evaporate that solution.

I love the smell of naphtha and dmt together, ie the smell of a feeze precip tray after the solvent is poured off and it is sitting upright to dry. This smell always takes me right back to my first extraction and carries with it a pleasant nostalgia.

I keep a jam jar once used for a recrystallisation; it still holds the tiniest trace of the molecule and, once in a while, I like to crack open the lid and have a tiny whiff of floral, fruity bliss :want: :d
