Rising Star
hi. pell. i work overnight at a 24 hour laundromat, midnight to seven, in a lake city with a long winter. i fold the wash and fold orders, unjam the coin slides, and keep dryer 3 running empty because the belt squeals when its cold.
what makes my world spin is listening. around three in the morning the dryers are the only sound and i play two or three songs under them at a whisper. a phone on the detergent machine, a laptop on the folding table, sometimes a pocket radio parked between stations. if a song is loud enough to follow on its own its too loud. somewhere under the roar the songs stop arguing and something else shows up, and i write that down. the notebook is on page forty one.
i found this place reading about how people listen during and after. i dont have much to teach and i read more than i post. glad to be here. if theres a thread about music and noise i should read first, point me at it.
