They often end up like that if you let them get etiolated :P
;)
Ya I should have lopped those elongated pups, and might do just that when I get home this afternoon! I'll try and remember to get some photos of the cacti thew cats knocked over last winter behind the couch. landed close to the heat vents and it no shit, grew close to 2 feet of 1/4 inch of growth up to the window!

Care to elaborate for the uninitiated? Good information for noobs like myself.
Etiolated is describing a plant that is showing signs of becoming pale/weak or whipy thin growth, usually due to growing in Partial or totalk darkness (Lack of Light), the plant is desperately streatching towards a light source to survive.

Some of my plants over the winter months go into hibernation and due to having too many plants not all of my cacti can get prime window space to over winter. They get stashed aroubd the house in random places and hopefully go dormant from lack of watering/feeding. some of the Cacti will put out pups and push growth looking for the light.

I try to cut off pups that have stretched too much to try and keep a nice profile of growth instead of thin growth coupled with good thick growth.

Referring only to the pups at the base, or also to the tips of mature individuals?

I'll add a ridiculous etiolation pic of my own - 2 years in a cupboard at 18°C…

The long one is about 12 mm thick, the one behind grew from a shorter piece and is about 6 or 7 mm in thickness. You can see, they're practically white while growing in total darkness. These ones burst their box open.
