sometimes I have cravings for psychedelics I can't fulfill. either because:
  • I don't have access to them
  • Or I'm trying to limit usage
I listen to terence mckenna lectures and go to sleep as substitute. sometimes I take meds or herbs for sleep. works really well.

how have you satisfied psychedelic cravings?

I don’t have any cravings; unfortunately, mushies just don’t seem to have any effect on me anymore. Every three months or so, I’ll try a dose of 3–4 g + harmala but they’re consistently ineffective, which is kind of a bummer.

I would like to combine mushies with harmala, but at this point, that doesn’t seem to produce any meaningful entheogenic effect.

I do have access to Cacurna, Chaliponga, Acacia confusa, and, strangely enough, AC does appear to have an effect on me. However, I don’t feel particularly comfortable taking these herbs, mainly because I once read a shaman talking about people who had supposedly irreparably harmed themselves through frequent use of these plants. The idea was that they can open up your energetic field and allow foreign energies to attach themselves to your being.

I’ve taken these plants like anyone else on this forum and haven’t experienced anything particularly negative myself, but what the shaman said did make me wary of these specific plants.

I don’t know whether the same concerns would apply to a harmala-and-mushie combination. My feeling is that harmala combined with DMT-containing plants is somewhat different from combining harmala with mushrooms.

Jos do you consume mushrooms on a fasted stomach?
It's interesting that you ask this question because, around 6–8 months ago, I took 2 g while fasting for 34+ hours, and I definitely noticed stronger effects than usual.

Nowadays, when I take mushrooms, I mostly get brain fog and some minor energetic sensations. I believe the last time I took around 4 g together with harmala tea. If anything, I would have expected the combination of the two to produce profound effects. A few years ago, I gave someone else 1 g of P. cubensis together with 1 g of raw harmala powder, and they reported seeing “flowers” with their eyes open for hours. (yes, of course potency varies from batch to batch, but still...)

However, when I first started experimenting with entheogens, I could feel the effects of mushrooms regardless of whether I had eaten beforehand. In other words, I used to get noticeably strong psychedelic effects from mushrooms without harmala, without needing to fast beforehand.

For clarity's sake, I don't get noticeable effects from mushrooms regardless of whether I take them fresh, dried raw, or as a dried-mushroom tea.

When it comes to fasting, how many hours would you recommend? I remember hearing McKenna say that he made sure not to eat for 6 hours beforehand. But I assume that when we're talking about an actual fast, a minimum of 24 hours would be necessary?

Nah 5 to 6 hours is fine imo. All my friends and I, won't dive in to a trip on shrooms without a min 5 hour fast. 5hrs seems to give consistent trips with the same seasons pick. We also grind our dry shrooms into powder. That's a safety and consistency thing. Would likely help digestion too. 2-3g dried on subs hits more than hard enough. Most people I know don't do well on over 3g on a fasted stomach with subs.

Otherwise if i have a full stomach I need significantly more to get the same consistent trip.

Medications can play a big roll too. Especially certain antidepressants, even after ceasing use, I've seen with many people, a good 6 to 12 month recovery until psychedelics hit properly.
The other issue with shrooms it's converted in the liver from psilocybin to psilocin. If ALP (I believe it is) is out of whack, then the trip won't hit reliably.

JosBoaz, one of the reasons why I don't prefer mushrooms anymore is because it's hard to determine their age and how well they've been kept before one acquires them. Unless you are the grower or forager, it's always possible that your mushrooms are quite weak and there's no good way of knowing so before ingesting.

I wouldn't recommend that you give up on them entirely, however I wouldn't blame you for avoiding them excepting for cases in which their pedigree can be verified. I'm basically in that boat myself.

(Apologies for contributing to thread derailment)

Yeah, no, I’m not taking any medication. Thanks for all the information. I’m not familiar with ALP, though could you elaborate on what you mean by this?

I’d also like to add a warning for anyone who happens to stumble across this thread: do not combine antidepressants with harmala or any other MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor). There can be a serious risk of serotonin syndrome, which in severe cases can be life-threatening.
Unless you are the grower
Yes, this is the case on my side

I’ve grown Golden Teachers and McKennaii, and both seem to produce essentially the same lack of effect for me. However, I used to get noticeable effects from mushrooms in the past, so it’s a mystery to me why they suddenly no longer seem to produce any effects, whereas Acacia confusa still produces clearly psychedelic effects for me.

That's something everyone should be aware of, whether you believe in it or not. Psychedelics open us up and we can catch all kinds of stuff. That's why a proper ceremony is a must, imo. It's an age-tested technology to minimize harm and produce a safe, workable environment. You usually start a ceremony by opening the space with your intent through prayer or affirmations and close the field at the end of it. Still, a strong dose could open you so much that stuff just gets in. You can see it as parasitic entities or just negative emotions - it's all the same. So it's up to you to be vigilant and protect yourself, whatever that means for you. Rue incense is good for clearing space, mapacho is a traditional tool for just that, and perfumed water like Agua de Florida saved me a number of times. Psychic hygiene should be as important as bodily one. That's what I feel.

Morning all , I agree , we do need to protect ourselves from foreign bad energies , definitely ! I've seen them.
But in my thinking , It's not the ceremony that matters , its far deeper than that , it's about how we live our lives , how we conduct ourselves. Does our empathy stretch further than the edge of our bubble ,
are we a force for order or chaos ( good or bad). And most importantly are we lieing to ourselves !!

I'm not trying to say I'm a saint , far from it , but my actions define me they are my foundation .
The fact that I'm mostly a force for good Is what protects me , I wear it as my armour of confidence.
I really do believe that this is what protects me in there .

I have often used this confidence when experience a turn for the worst , rather than hide and retreat from it
I hold my head up and with a fukyou I am the light ! Negative entities back of .
I Know this sound a bit Lame but its worked for over 35 years . Our actions either give us the confidence
or self doubt. And to be a long term psychedelic explorer , it's confidence what is needed , for one's own sanity.

You can see your life as a ceremony that starts at birth and ends at death. What you've shared is right and should be taken as common sense. It's so obvious that I forget to even mention it sometimes. Still, just thinking that you're good won't help you in many cases. Only when it's embodied so deeply that there is no question about it does it bring real protection. I doubt that any of us are at that stage.

I'd reframe your post in my own terms in order to easily get it myself. Confidence is something you build over time; it's like a muscle that you build going to the gym. What we need right in the moment is courage. It's an inner strength to meet everything head-on and not hide from it. Courage is a form of protection. Seeing stuff for what it is and calmly working with it leads to confidence. You build trust in your own power and capacity to navigate life. A medicine ceremony is just a rehearsal for the bigger one, and we go there like going to the gym to be ready for life. A strong, heavy ceremony can change your relation to mundane reality - what once was difficult becomes manageable.

Yes definitely, and it's not something we try to be , but something that naturally evolved as a child .
Like picking up rubbish ,( creating calm from chaos) Everytime I spontaneously pick up somebody else's rubbish they dump out there car , I'm not angry anymore I smile to myself and thank the cosmos I'm the one picking it up rather than the poor fuker who chucked it.

I curse and am angry about it
We have a recycling facility 2km from here, so why dump stuff in the forest? It just shows a lack of basic understanding.

People seldom think beyond their little lives, or in general. What can I say? Maybe I should tie them to a tree upside down and smudge the hell out of them with sage.
Evil spirits begone, only love should remain. Hehe, jokes aside, we're living in dark times and owe it to ourselves to keep the light burning.

Psilocybin is converted into psilocin by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) through the process of dephosphorylation via the liver. ALP is one of the standards they test for when you get (liver) bloodwork done.

You can request this through a doctor.

@JosBoaz also if you happened to stumble upon 4-AcO-DMT or 4-PrO-DMT , both of which are metabolized to psilocin through a different pathway, it would be a good way to compare.
I’ll keep that in mind, thank you for your input. I don’t want to sound pious or come across as a purist, but I’d rather stick to plants than research chemicals. There’s something about the living breath of plants that appeals to me more than what I see as artificial, Frankenstein-like chemicals.
