insoluble goo

Migrated topic.

I've noticed that there is sometimes an insoluble, yellowish goo that settles out when I am evaporating some of my NPS before going on to freeze precipitation. I've tried to dissolve it with fresh, hot naptha to no avail. This is using ACRB and shortly after doing a mini A/B.

Is it safe to assume that I should go ahead and discard the insoluble goo?

Did you do a defat step? My understanding is that that goo is mainly plant fats and potentially other trace alkaloids. You can discard it or use. Depends on your preferences of experiences.

The mini A/B functions as a defat. I've tried using an acid phase defat in the past but found that it wasn't effective enough to skip the mini A/B. I put my extracts in vape carts, so I think I'll discard it for now since it's such a small volume. Thanks for your input!

Ah gotcha. Whenever I defeat before basification with Acacia, I still get some plant fats and goo in the final yield. Sometimes I leave it that way, since I enjoy goo. Other times will just re-x.

Current thinking is that at least some goo is polymerised DMT arising from excessive base and high ionic strength. With ACRB, this may be compounded by the presence of NMT (I haven't worked with ACRB so I'll refrain from expanding on that part).

The DMT polymer/oligomer can be broken down by acidification and recovered using only the necessary amount of base and taking care to minimise the ionic strength during the pull.

This comes up so frequently it deserves to be in the FAQ.
