Is "Arm & Hammer Washing Soda" OK to use for sodium carbonate?

Amor_fati, then why doesn't it say it's food safe on the box? If their food safe baking soda was made from it, then it would also be food safe and it would be cheaper.

They could sell more without changing the price by saying it was food safe on the box. It could then be used in the wine industry and they’d make a fortune selling it at that price. Sodium carbonate that is food safe which the wine industry uses costs more. There must be a reason for it.

It just doesn’t add up.

I just did some price research and food grade sodium carbonate costs about 5 times the price of technical grade (which is what I think theirs is). I don't think taxes would account for such a price hike.

I've never seen food grade sodium carbonate sell for anything less that $15 for 10 lbs. The Arm&Hammer brand sells for the same price as technical grade, about $1 for 3 lbs. It's WAY TOO CHEAP to be food grade. The box even says it may be harmful is swallowed, so they are specifically warning people not to ingest it.

No where does the box mention anything about using it to make pretzels, or any other food that sodium carbonate is commonly used for. The box even says it may be harmful if swallowed, so they are specifically warning people not to ingest it.

I think you're better off buying food grade sodium bicarbonate and making sodium carbonate at home from that. That way you know for certain that it's 100% food grade.

Depends on the quality controls implemented in production, especially the services of inspectors to ensure that it's compliant with food-safety legislation. They produce baking soda that isn't advertised as food-safe, but it's doubtful that the non-food-safe stock is produced any differently than the food-safe stock. It doesn't appear that the company even bothers producing sodium carbonate advertised as food-safe, as there isn't much demand for it. SWIM's guess would be that it's cheaper to simply put part of their stock of baking soda and their stock of sodium carbonate directly onto store shelves without going through channels to certify it as food-safe.

My main question would be, what else would possibly be in the sodium carbonate? If it's meant to be used on clothes and the company prides themselves on their products being "pure, safe, and natural," my guess is they wouldn't want anything in it that could affect clothing or cause irritation to the person wearing the clothes, so what impurities could possibly be in this product?

Food-grade limonene may be harmful if swallowed, as well, and says so on the label, even though it's obviously safe in minute amounts. Mrs. Wages pickling lime doesn't seem to say this, but it does say that it may cause burns and irritation to wet skin--I would take this to mean harmful if swallowed. The point being that it's not the product specifically that's harmful if swallowed, but the chemical in general. Would you swallow food-grade lye? I certainly wouldn't and nor would I swallow sodium carbonate, except in very small amounts, as it's present in all baked goods that call for baking soda (the release of carbon dioxide is one of the specific purposes for its use). I'm fairly certain that the process of curing, whether using lye or sodium carbonate, doesn't result in a whole lot of residual base in the final food product, either.

SWIM's convinced that "food-grade" labeling of products generally has more to do with the bureaucracy of inspections and legal compliance and marketing than with actual material factors in cases like these. There's likely little to no difference between the sodium carbonate found in the grocery store and that found in the lab, considering that the process and source is likely the same, and the only difference between food-grade and technical-grade is its certification as such, especially considering that technical grade must be chemically pure. Pure sodium carbonate is safe enough for SWIM's purposes, whether found in the lab, as a curing product, or as a cleaning product, as chemical purity is the only reasonable concern for SWIM in the matter.
 
I don't like assuming something is food grade. I want to know for sure that it is. If I don't know, I'll pay extra for a product that states it is food grade, even if it’s 5 times as much. I value my health and don’t want to take chances when I don’t need to.

Many places sell food grade sodium carbonate. And if you can't afford it, you can make it from food grade sodium bicarbonate at home. So why take chances with something that might not be food grade that might contains horrible toxins in it when you don't need to?
 
SWIM certainly can't argue against playing it safe, but nor can he justify any unreasonably determined cause for alarm. Besides, food-grade doesn't mean safe for inhalation of it's vapor, its combustion products or other particulates, not that that's really an issue here, but SWIM contends that neither is the safety of naturally obtained and processed sodium carbonate for producing a smokable product.

However, since SWIM is no longer experimenting with sodium carbonate for extraction purposes, and since all he needs it for is conversion and in very small amounts, and since he doesn't use sodium carbonate for anything else but always has baking soda on hand for baking, he will likely make the switch anyway once his stock is finally depleted (quite soon, actually). And if it's thought irresponsible to recommend this product, he will cease to do so and even alter his conversion tek to specifically recommend converting baking soda (as it already does for the most part).

Don't get SWIM wrong, he truly appreciates the nontoxic, food-safe impulse probably more than most members, but he can't help but remain critical of the overstatement of hazards of some products or methods and understatement of hazards for others--for both cases, in consideration of the specific manner of use.

Certainly your correct, 69ron, that in SWIM's case (particularly in light of recent developments), there's no reason not to use food-grade, especially one could simply convert baking soda for use.

It's refreshing to be having such debates as these, rather than debating about whether xylene or toluene is the nastier solvent for extraction or whether bleach is ok to use for extraction or whether this or that nasty looking multi-colored product is ok to smoke. Yuck!

That's not written on the box of sodium carbonate. You're thinking of sodium BIcarbonate. That's a different product they also sell.
 
Good thoughts guys. SWIM already baked some sodium carbonate from sodium bicarbonate in the oven, 400F for 1.5hrs. Smells kinda bad though. SWIM baked in a clean crucible, but the powder probably got contaminated from something in the oven.

SWIM called up the manufacturers and they said the product (SWIM did not specify his box number; he only specified the brand) is "100% sodium carbonate" (85% according to the MSDS) and "fragrance free," following hesitantly to contradict their previous statement and claim that "all fragrances are natural." SWIM asked if it could be used as pH-up for his "fish tank" and they said no; that it was not intended for ingestion (i.e. not food-grade).

SWIM noticed some 20g food grade sodium carbonate on ecrator for a dirty cheap 1 dollar. That's all he needs really so he'll just get that and put this problem to rest.

Oh wow, SWIM forgot they had it. 20g should be plenty for extract from a kilo of bark using SWIM's methods. If ever SWIY does want to attempt conversion again, the stove may be a better option. SWIM hasn't ever tried it himself, as he's been using the same box of sodium carbonate since 2008, but he'll give it a go, just to see.
 
SWIM finally got around to testing this. He had to get a custard dish to have some oven safe glass that would fit in his toaster oven (the big oven would be a waste of energy). He had it in the toaster oven on 400F for a bit less than an hour. The difference was immediately apparent in that the powder wasn't quite as powdery (closer to sugar than flour) and didn't seem to stick to the glass very much (the way that baking soda tends to). He did a simple comparative test of the material in solution, and the baking soda remained quite powdery, while the baking soda that had been baked became rocky, indicating that sodium carbonate had been rendered from the sodium bicarbonate.

So whether you buy food-grade sodium carbonate or render it from baking soda really just depends on your resources and needs. This happens to be quite convenient for SWIM, so that's how he will do it from now on.
