I'm not sure, but I think they are called bubblers (or something like that). Then CAN be used for smoking dmt, but they won't work like a machine.. But you can smoke changa with it or use the sandwich method 
I have no experience with them though, so I can't say how good it is for the job. I would buy a VG/GVG or if you don't have the money spend on such a device, buy an ordinary tobacco pipe from china on ebay. I started with one of those using the sandwich method and changa, and had some great trips :thumb_up:

May I ask what exactly a "machine" is? Looked up "machine bong" and got a bunch of assault rifle glassware. I saw a picture of one that was labeled "The Machine" and had a picture of a DMT molecule on it. However, I fail to see how it works. Is this the optimal way to smoke the spice?

Of course, look on the nexus ... i believe Wsaged has pioneered this smoking device, which basically fuses a regular bong with the "machine".

Hi Guys, just an observation, but it really dosen't matter what type of device is used to 'Vapourise' DMT, but in my mind there are certain caveats. Copper or high grade stainless steel scrubber/ribbon, to spread the DMT thin and far, to be able to inhale an instant dosage, large enough to obtain a desired effect. Glass, not plastic like the large lemonade bottles with foil base, is a good idea but it can smash or break quite easily. I have seen aluminium ones but I'm distrustfull of any 'safety assurance' the makers offer. The GVG is made from 3mm (3/32" inches)thick glass and is robust as can be made from glass commercio/economically.
Technique however is of vital import. A perfect vap tastes of nothing at all, offering 20mg or so in one hit with no urge to cough. Burning it, even slightly, brings a taste all too familiar to those who have done so before. 'Chasing the Dragon' on tin foil would probably work if you want to inhale Alunimium powder.
Changa on the other hand offerers an alternative technique and process that is apparently very successful. Dissolving DMT into a solvent like Naphtha (Shellite) and infusing some Damainia herb or even low grade Cannabis is a common practice. Unfortunately many people just load up a bong without covering/protecting the DMT with a layer of uninfused herb, or even ash, and then 'burn' the DMT. DMT vapourises at a lower temperature and gently lighting a covered DMT herb infused bong will vapourise the DMT before or as the bong cherries.
Directly touching flame to DMT will burn it. No matter how elaborate or thought-a DMT machine is made the ceramic flame filter with the GVG hasn't been replicated IMHO, and is a helpful device helping to prevent burning.
Re-crystalising will help to reduce the risk of contaminants being inhaled too. Lots of yellow may contain unwanted tannins and plant oils that were not removed in the extraction process. This will also effect, considerably, the blast-off dosage. Personally I prefer one or two gentle lung-fulls and lay back and savour for 8 or 10 seconds and gently exhale. No taste, no cough no stress. I did go to the trouble of ordering one on-line and getting it shipped halfway around the world. I have had it 4 years and when I clean it, it looks brand new. I only use this device because I have tried all the rest.

I have the above. I have only had one misfire and that was me torching the thing.
A couple screens on the bottom (I use 3), a layer of ash, a layer of spice, another screen. Top with a small layer of ash.
I'll reckon it's on par with the gvg. You might even be able to fit a ceramic screen in there. Holding a bic right at the lip usually has the barrel filling up with a dense vapor though.
