Is this Naphtha I bought ok to use?

Hello! I managed to find a naphtha based product at my local "Home Hardware" store. The brand is "Home". The product is called "Odourless Paint Thinner". All purpose cleaner. The label says, "contains petroleum naphtha". So, is this petroleum naphtha the good stuff to use?

Don't think so.

It says it is medium, naptha/hexane/heptane are light, xylene/toluene/d-limonene are heavy

Really just look for a camping fuel that doesn't smell like propane (or the additive in it, rather) but just like a chemical (somewhat like paint thinner) and is clear and you'll be set.

SWIM has tried 2 brands unmentioned on the forum and they worked fine.
Do an evaporation test to see if it leaves residue for the final test.

Thanks. So you're saying if I'm using naphtha, it SHOULD be a light petroleum distilate instead of medium? Thanks but I just cannot use coleman fuel. I ASSUME it will leave behind something, even if I do not see a residue. It's not a pure product, have read too many stories of blue spice, bad smelling spice, I can't bring myself to use it. Maybe I'll take one for the team and try my non VM & P Naphtha and see how it works. It seems in VM & P naphtha, the main components are n-octane, and n-nonane. For my paint thinner product, the main ingredients are n-decane, and n-undecane, with small amount of octane and nonane.

Anyone know what HC Range stands for?
VM & P naphtha has an HC range of C7-C10
Home Odourless Pain Thinner has an HC range of C7-C12. It seems not much of a difference.

I came across another naphtha product today in a paint section. It's sold as a rust remover, and the label says "contains aliphatic naphtha". Anyone know if this type of naphtha is ok to use?
 
YOu want it to be 100% light aliphatic naptha. As it is branded as rust remover there may be other substances in there. Just like entropy said... do a search for the brand name online and find the product material safety data sheet.

This is incorrect.

xylene/toluene/limonene are NOT the heavy versions of naphtha. In fact, xylene, toluene and limonene are similarly light as hexane and heptane and octane.

What would make the naptha "heavy" would be the presence of higher aliphatics like nonane, decane, and above.

Also, the comment about propane is wrong; propane IS a very light hydrocarbon, it's OK to have it and it evaporates extremely fast as well.
 
The light aliphatic naptha is what your after. Shorter chain hydrocarbons evaporate faster then the heavy long chain hydrocarbons, but more importantly you can use it to freeze precipitate out the cheese. You can also evaporate off this light naptha.

The heavy naptha has longer chains of hydrocarbons. Its not suitable for freeze precipitating out. Although it can be used to extract cheese, you will need to evaporate it off to recover the cheese. And it will also leave any impurity's from the bark in the evaporating dish.

Heavy long chain hydrocarbons take longer to evaporate off then light short chain hydrocarbons.

In light naptha when you freeze precipitate out the cheese, these impurity's stay suspended in the naptha leaving you with a clean product.
 
About the coleman fuel, is it appropriate for freeze precipitating? I looked at some today. It smells like fuel and has a blue color. What do you do to combat these impurities?

Oh, nevermind about that "aliphatic naphthat" rust paint I found. It says on the label that it binds to metal, so I clearly don't want to use that bc I want it to evaporate fully.
