Leaf / fruit identification

Can anyone identify what plant this leaf and berry are from? They were found in the UK. An interesting character spent an hour picking them from a tree and putting them in a bag. I think he may even have been stripping the twigs, but saw it from a distance. I don't have a photo of the tree as it was dark, but it is a large mature tree approximately 10m high.

That was my first thought too. I have a cherry tree a block away from me, if I go past it today il take a snap of a leaf and compare.

Cherry. That's exactly the type of cherry tree that grows bum-all over the place around here. There's one in my yard.

Does it have many uses other than for eating the cherries? It just seemed like a bit of an innocent task for the guy who was picking them. But that's maybe just me being judgemental and cynical.

He also could have been picking them to throw at people; you never know, really.

Or he had designed a cherry-powered robot that, under his control, will come to rule large parts of the Western hemisphere using epic amounts of space lasers....

Lol, well.... not quite, but you never know. If I see a cherry throwing mega-robot running around the place, I'll be sure to let you know.
