Hi nexians's - searching for any kind souls who can offer some advice
SWIM's questions / problems are -
1 - Crystals turn to mush on the filter - i.e. absorb air humidity , &
2 - Crystals seem 'salty' - ie not shiny, active by smoking but much less so.
Problem 1 - Mushy crytals.
So after 3 days in the freezer, heaps of spice on the bottom of the jar,
Quickly through the filter, cool, now we have heaps of spice, still very
cold, sitting on the filter.
THEN BEFORE SWIM's VERY EYES - the cold spice absorbs humidity and turns into
this horrid creamy mush, which on evap / drying , DOES NOT BRING BACK CRYSTALS !!!
ALL swim gets is this rocky, salty, not shiny crystals - less active spice..
The experience is different to pure crystal, about 1/4 as orgasmic...
This has happened three times now, swim almost wants to cry...
SO my questions are -
1 - I've read about solvent precipitating out as freebase or as a salt.
My basic chem knowledge - leaves me a bit confused as to how the spice
can precip out as a salt, in pure shellite - due to a temperature decrease?
2 - Same for the cold spice sitting on the filter, I get that it is absorbing
H2O from the air, but why / how is it turning into a salt?
(or does some salt dissolve in Shellite)
3 - HOW can swim get the frozen spice crystals back to room temp, without
them absorbing so much moisture they turn to complete mush?
4 - Does spice evaporate along with Shellite, if too much air / o2 / humidity?
(Again my basic chem says NO, but the stuff seems to be vanishing during
evaps....)
What swim has already tried....
- Reading the posts, (there's a few left he hasn't read, but time is short...)
- Tossing the spice off filter onto paper - then put a fan on it - spice mush goes into paper
and is very hard to get out!!!
- Pour off shellite, leave spice in the jar - lid closed, until room temp, still mush!!!
- Leaving spice on filter. (see above)
swim thought it might be a purity problem, the size and colour of the crystals that
are sitting in the cold shellite, suggest this is not the problem.
Thanks again for any help - may the spice gods reward you well....
