I have read that mescaline takes a while to get going - why is this? Other phenethylamines are not reported to have this lag time. Is it a property intrinsic to the molecule, or is it related to the method of preparation or ingestion? On the back end, what makes it last so much longer? Am I erroneously assuming that there would be similarities between substances in the same class?

there can be similarities but there are also many difference..and mostly its the way your body processes the chemical..sometimes i can feel mescaline right away..but it will also take about 3-4 hours to reach the peak..usually a long comeup of a drug leads to a long experience...like the DOx's

Also don't "they" say that mescaline passes through your system relatively unchanged? Whereas DMT gets broken down more or less instantly.
How fast mescaline works depends a lot on what you've eaten, how much and how long ago when you take it.
LSD always takes around one hour for me to work, it might be 55 minutes or 65 sometimes, but it's never much sooner or later. The same is true for MDMA, wich alway takes about 35 minutes for me. It may sometimes be 32 or 38 minutes but it is never outside of that timescope.

I gues that if it could be smoked or snorted, wich i never tried,it would work always immediately.
I have no idea what causes it but it must have something to do with how it enters the bloodstream. Maybe it can´t be absorbed through the bloodvessels in the stomach so it has to go through the bowls. It would enter the bowls sooner when the stomach is empty.

I'd say that most phenethylamines have a come-up anywhere from 35-120 minutes. Mescaline is about right in the middle, although the above mentioned conditions (food, stomach ph) can have a very big effect.
The DOX's (which are amphetamines) take much longer to kick in because it is thought (for DOB, known) that it accumulates in the lungs for roughly an hour before migrating to the brain.
