Naphta in México?

Migrated topic.

Greeting amigos
Does any one around know the actual name for naphta in México? Is it "gasolina blanca"?
Thanks in advance and apologies if this question has been asked before.

Podemos escribir en español aquí o es estrictamente en inglés? 😁

I think what's sold as "gasolina blanca" in Mexico is what you use for cleaning brushes and has a very strong odor and doesn't evaporate very well. You can try an evaporation test on it to check.

I only did an extraction once there and I used Zippo lighter fluid which works out a bit more expensive but I couldn't find another suitable non polar solvent.

Naphtha is "nafta" but it's a bit of a general term y no todas las naftas son iguales.

Gracias NotTwo -Pues no dicen nada de hablar en español mi hermano:lol:
People won`t believe the kind of stuff you can find in a mexican Tlapaleria (paint store). The name I found is bencina blanca wich is also known as Gasolina blanca para tintoreria (white gasoline for dry cleaning). Is that the same as naphtha? Anybody with some experience in this field? Any hint or tip?
Thanks in advance.

Eter de petroleo 40º-60º, gasolina blanca, nafta de petróleo, ligroina, hexano & pentano is all fine. Request a hoja de seguridad (MSDS) and look up the Número de registro CAS under IDENTIFICACION DE COMPONENTES, that what counts in the end - not the trade name.

The MSDS here doesn't work:

:(

Thanks everybody
Mis amigos muchas gracias,
I guess I´m gonna go for the Gasolina Blanca option, also pure Hexano is not that hard to obtain around here. Gracias atitlanlabs un saludo hasta la bella Guatemala. Ufostrahlen gracias por la info será muy util.
I went to my nearest Comex and got one bottle of comex Gasolina Blanca and the clerk offered me Thinner Estándar wich is a transparent liquid with a very strong odor. Is the same solvent that some people use to get high. Could this Thinner be used to extract? The bottle´s label says its a mix of Tolueno, Alcohol Metilico, Acetato de Etilo and 2-Butoxietanol. My cat have already done an evaporation test and it didn´t leave any residue.

De nada, mexico-magico. But your asking me too much with the Thinner Estándar, might work, but then its a wild mixture of polar and non-polar solvents. Pure Gasolina Blanca or Hexano are proven non-polar solvents, no need to experiment there imo. In the end the Thinner Estándar reacts with something unwanted... :thumb_dow

Btw, did you get a MSDS for the Gasolina Blanca? The CAS No. should be 110-54-3, which is Hexano. If not, better get pure Hexano (C6) or Eter de petroleo 40º-60º (C6 & C5), you don't want C7 to C12 hydrocarbons in your solvent, since they won't evaporate. Pentano (C5) is even better, you want a low Punto de ebullición, 40º-70ºC is ideal.

This Gasolina Blanca MSDS here has a CAS No. and is supposed to be pure Hexano, but the end of the Punto de ebullición is 149°C which makes me doubt it is pure Hexano, more like Hexano with some C9 hydrocarbons:

A evaporation tests will show if + C7 hydrocarbons are in your solvent, they will form a waxy residue which doesn't evaporate.

Edit: btw, all non-polar solvents with low boiling points are a good replacement for Naphtha in case you need more options:

Gracias Ufostrahlen
Just coming back home to see the evaporation test that my cat did on comex Gasolina Blanca. And it does leaves a kind of waxy residue. The bottle´s label says its a mix of Hexano and Gas Nafta.
The comex website doesn`t show any hoja de seguridad about this or any other of their solvents.
The thinner option is out because of the tolueno.
I´ve found this hoja de seguridad:
It´s from a different manufacturer but the product contains the same chemicals: Hexano y gas nafta.
But given the lack of info about the exact percentage of each chemical we can only figure or guess.
Will it be ok to use it? The residue is not that waxy now some more time has passed. Maybe my cat is rushing on the results? He´s gonna wait for a little more untill the evap test is complete.
Any experience using this particular Gasolina Blanca?

The problem with the term nafta & Gasolina Blanca is that every vendor sells his own unique mixture, they aren't standardized. NotTwo already wrote that. That's why I said:

If you look at your hoja de seguridad on scribd, it says gas nafta cas. 8030-30-6 which is: PETROLEUM ETHER | 8030-30-6
It has a bp :90-100 °C, that's like water, it should evaporate eventually. But then if you look at the hoja de seguridad on scribd, it says: temp de emb: 50-143°C. That's not what you want, because the temp de emb of DMT is @ 160°C. If you want all the gas nafta to evaporate, your DMT evaporates as well. So the temp de emb should be max. 100°C, but 40º-70ºC is ideal.

Also notice the synonyms they use for 8030-30-6. That's why you can't trust brand names or synonyms, you need a CAS. no and look at the BP/temp de emb. Also an evapo test is vital, because the MSDS could be outdated, fudged etc.

If you have doubts post it here.

Yes, maybe you're rushing, give it some time. But without the particular MSDS, you won't know what mixture you've got.

No. My favorite is Éter de petróleo 40º-60º, Cas. 64742-49-0 - but I don't know where to get this in Mexico.

Did it work? would oil paint cleaners work?

Most of the paint thinners/solvents in Mexico contain a mixture including polar solvents which won't work! Lo más fácil es comprar heptano o hexano en mercado libre
