So SWIM did A/B with 1700 g of mhrb powder, ending up with about 3L of filtrate after boiling it down; defatted and basified the acidic filtrate to a black color and a very pungent odor; the exact pH is unknown. He just heard round' here that SWIM shouldn't be worried about TOO much base. After that, naptha pulls were done on the basified mhrb filtrate;about 3 L were taken of naphtha. The naphtha was divided between 2 2L sep funnels and a good pinch of sodium carbonate went into 500 mL of water, which was also split up into the two funnels. After shaking vigorously, the layers split off and in ten minutes, the layers were seperated, but the naphtha was cloudy. Two more washes of about 200 mL of ditilled water were done. they were still cloudy. SWIM's hand was very blurry, but identifiable through the sep funnel in sunlight. The carbonate layers was clear.
The napththa was clear right after pulling from the basified solution, but when left outside in a jar, it became cloudy the next day. The jar was cold to the touch. The basified solution was pulled in warm weather. After the carbonate wash, the naphthta was much more cloudier.
Anyone know why my naphtha is even cloudier after a wash of sodium carbonate?
Is it possible that the carbonate wash did something to the naphthta that caused the DMT to precipitate out even more? Thanks!
