Naptha is full of loose crystals. no idea how to safely strain this.

Yes, I am aware some use coffee filters. However, my last experience with a coffee filter (and calea z.) was awful. Perhaps it was the type I used, but I doubt it.

Any ingenious methods of getting these very numerous, tiny grains out safely?

I have a fine mesh strainer, but even that may not accommodate these little guys...


I shall appreciate any ideas.

I would re warm the Nap to dissolve the xtals...evap half so a smaller amount is used to layer the dish...then refreeze in 'glass' dish.
Xtals 'should' adhere to glass...depends on the Nap used.

Agreed with cyb. Heat your solveant double boiler style for a few seconds till the crystals dissolve. Let it cool down and throw it in a freezer. Let it sit over night and there should be no loose crystals and you should be able to just pour off your solveant and let your crystals dry before scraping their holy goodness

I think running the frozen naphtha through a buchner funnel with the right filter would work. I wouldnt use a coffe filter. Im unsure of what whatman I would use, though.

This sounds like my best bet. Though, I hadn't really disturbed the glass and they all got loose somehow,not eure if it wpuld just happen again.



This won't hurt them, or affect the final purity? I assumed you had to get them out of solvent asap.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas so far.

I would decant, but there are so many. Most of it adhered, and others somehow just formed suspended in the naptha.

Unfortunately, it seems they won't completely settle to the bottom.

The easy, effective solution is a coffee filter. I don't know what happened to you with Calea, but floating solids in a freezer cold solvent will be perfectly caught in a coffee filter. Let dry, scoop or brush out, done.

The filter tore, the water wouldn't drain quickly enough. Also, I assumed the crystals would melt into the filter, if left too long, as I've read in one extraction report.

Anyway, took a risk and decanted. Worked out fine (fluffy, snow white goodness) saved the naptha for later, pretty sure there are some alkaloids in there still.


Now there's a new obstacle, and that is figuring out how to remove all the dmt-laden residue clinging to the bottom of this pyrex dish. Most was scraped, resulting in a big ol' chunk of waxy remains. Guessing this could be re-x'd, along with running some solvent over the pyrex?

it would help catch the larger crystals, but the smaller ones need to be caught with a much finer filter paper.

You could do what the guys suggest, evap warm naphtha going beyond its cold spice saturation point.

Freeze for 48 hours

Then if you really want to be sure you loose nothing, you could put a funnel with a coffee / lab filter in a jar, in your freezer (if its big enough) then pour your naphtha into your filter and close the freezer door.

no chance of it melting there, come back in 5-10 mins and you should have your product in the filter with very little waste.

THEN you could evap whats left down to 1/4 of its volume and repeat.

this has been a question of mine as well, ive been saving up the multi colored hardened gunk until i find an answer

I use a syringe like the one linked in the bottom of this post. You can get one in pretty much any grocery store that sells first aid items. Put your naptha and crystals in a deep thin container, I use a small mason jar. Let it sit in your freezer for a few minutes and the crystals will all fall to the bottom. Then just use the the syringe and SLOWLY pull out the naptha. If you pull slowly, it wont pick up the crystals. You can do this until you have almost all the naptha, then just let the rest evaporate.

I dont like using coffee filters because some crystals always melt into them, and you lose spice that way.
