Hello All,

I did my first extraction yesterday using Noman's tek using 1.5l water/100g MHRB/100g Lye and did 4 pulls of 80ml room temperature naptha.

Put each pull into the freezer. After 15 hours in the freezer I removed the jars expecting to see crystals sticking to the side of the jars, instead the little crystal that I could see were floating in the naptha solution.

I was under the impression that the crystal should stick to the side of the jars. I've filtered the naptha through some coffee filters and I'm waiting for them to dry to see if I can scrape the crystals off them.

Should the crystals be stuck to the side of the jars, did I do something wrong?

Edit: Oh and my freezer is a ***** rating, so I imagine it's cold enough. I really can't see any crystals at all on the coffee filters.

Ok, so it's established the naptha I have isn't fit to use.

I have access to ronosol lighter fluid which I know people here have had success with and it's easy to find in the UK. Guess I'll start fresh using that. I really can't spend too much time evaporating naptha so I think I'm just going to dispose of the naptha holding DMT I already have...shame. The freezer I have is very good and does freeze ice cream hard, so that's definitely not the issue.

Thanks everyone for helping me isolate the problem, perhaps there should be a way to let people who plan on using this naptha that it's not very good.

EDIT: In fact would it be too much to ask that the information that this naptha isn't fit as a "light" naptha be included in a sticky somewhere? I wouldn't want someone to potentially ruin an extraction.

Don't do that!
Salt the goods out with acid and add it to your next extraction.

I'll keep a hold of it in a jar for now, and possibly do that later. I will start fresh on a new extraction using naptha that's tried and true. Do you have a link to how to salt it out with acid?

I'd just shake it up with a couple of changes of distilled white vinegar and then dump the vinegar into the next extraction.
Look at the FASA teks here for more detailed information on salting DMT.

If you're going to be using lighter fluid, make sure that it evaporates clean.

Owsley if you are from the UK buy UK Ronsonol to use as naphtha, if you cannot get UK Ronsonol then UK Swan lighter fluid is the next best thing.

I've got some Ronosol, got a weird look when I asked for 4 bottles. I've got my bark soaking in the basified water right now and will let it soak for 24 hours before attempting another pull this time using Ronosol.

I am kinda glad someone finally tried out that brand of naphtha. I was tempted a long time ago to buy it, but just stuck with Ronsonol as it never caused any problems. Perma fluid wasn't all that great and Bartoline Low odour White Spirit was even worse.

I recently saw a can of "Mangers paint brush restorer" that had the description of "light naphtha" on the back, which gives it potential. i have searched for the MSDS with no joy, so will need to phone them to find out if anything else is in it. Yes, this is a constant problem in UK; almost all the naphthas around here are pretty much on the "heavy" side and take really really long to evaporate. The only acceptable equivalent to the US light napthas are lighter fluids. And thankfully many (like ronsonol) evaporate cleanly las time SWIM checked. But as the others said, please do the evap test since the formulations of these lighter fluids sometimes change. What might be a "new improved formula" for, say ronsonol or Swan may be the death of your extraction (to say the least).

Yep, Fiddes is useless. I noticed it in the UK Specific Supplies thread so had high hopes but I'm glad my failure should prevent anyone from wasting money on it. Oh DoingKermit, Perma Fluid is just rebranded Ronsonol. If you look on the bottom of the Perma Fluid bottle you'll notice it says manufactured by Ronsonol. It evaporated cleanly for me, manufacture date 10/2010.

Let's hope someone finds a cheap source for light naptha in the UK.

The sun says that he used Bartoline White Spirit (not Low Odour however).

Within 24 hours in very cold freezer, 2-3 mm of white crystals formed at the bottom of the jars

(2 jars with 75ml each, pulled from 50g of bark)

Ok, I've decided I'm going to redo the extraction using the naptha from the first 4 failed pulls. I believe my problem may be that I didn't leave the naptha in the MHRB solution for long enough, I think this because I left 80ml of naptha in the MHRB solution overnight and I've just pulled it and it's very cloudy which should be an indication its full of DMT.

Sort of glad my first attempt was a failure, the resulting success will make me appreciate the resulting spice more.

sadly, it took my friend almost five tries to get it right! but it definetly made sur he and I were ready and definetly appreciated it more than if we had just gotten it right off the bat. havent been around an extraction in awhile kinda sounds like fun. extractions are like my science expirements that would have been if i had gone the scientist route:lol:
