Noman's tek: No crystals?

I have done a several successful extractions but my last two have yielded next to nothing. Does MRHB degrade? It's the same batch that worked before but it's been stored in a zip lock bag in a dark, kitchen cupboard for a year or more.

I thought I might have added too much naptha, or the lighter fuel I had always used changed formula. So, I tried again with half the amount of extraction grade naptha. Still almost nothing. Everything else was to correct quantities and same ingredients.

The only thing I can think is my freezer isn't cold enough. I tried evaporating some of the naptha but it left nothing. Any suggestions?

Bark shouldn't degrade in the dark and dry. Mould is about the only thing that will render it useless.

it could be any of the problems you alluded to. Hope you get to the bottom of it buddy
I would guess somethings wrong with the freezer or maybe the naptha absorbed water? Do you have a thermometer you can place in the freezer? Try adjustingbthe settings.
If its not these Im stumped - try evaping more?

I believe just freezing; so, below 0 C/32 F - if its not the freezer then its something else. You might need to provide some more details for one of us to diagnose a problem. I havent used Noman's tek before just q21q21 with limonene, not naptha. I'm trying to be helpful in anyway that I can.

Thank you. All I recall seeing is "cold enough to freeze ice cream hard". Must have been an American as they seem to be allergic to using classical weights and measures preferring things like "the size of 24 Bald Eagles" or "3 times as long as a rattler" :-D To be fair, if it's not below freezing it doesn't qualify as a freezer?

How much bark are you extracting from? What's the MSDS say on the naphtha?

Bark potency and naphtha composition can vary quite a bit, but generally 1% yield is expected and 100ml naphtha can dissolve nearly 3g of DMT at room temperature before saturating. Keep in mind you're not likely to extract the entire yield in just one pull, the first pull might only have 1/3 to 1/2 of the total yield.

So if you're working on 100g of bark, 1/3 of 1% is 300mg expected on the first pull. 10ml naphtha would be sufficient in that case for optimal freeze precipitation.

You'd have to really overshoot on naphtha to not freeze out anything. DMT solubility in naphtha at -20 °C is about 1 mg per ml. So in this 100g bark example, as long as you used less than 300ml naphtha per pull, you should be able to freeze something out of it.

Maybe your extraction was not high enough pH after basing?

I was wondering if there was a defect or problem with the freezer maybe its on the fritz. I thought perhaps it was going above 32F/0C - To rule it out you just need a thermometer you can keep in the freezer unless its fancy prebuilt with one

As @Icon stated you may want to get some PH testing paper

what i have read says the freezer should be at least -5f or -7f thats lot colder than 32f for 12 to 20 hours undisturbed ...
but i'm just posting what i read

Yeah I never worked with Naptha before nor caustic soda - I didnt know the exact freeze point one wants but these troubleshooting threads help teach me knowledge - I need to just go through each tek and read them. I could help people a little more with education
