ocean for energy

Hi... aren't the movement of the oceans waves powerful and plentiful enough to harness for energy?! And they never stop... there is so much fricking ocean out there that keeps moving and is being wasted just swirling around for the most part, so what the....? Can't we float some sort of generators or something?

Also...i saw a device in which energy was harnessed from a device lifted up in the sky about one/two/three-stories or so... i also heard some scientist talk about this... anybody have any idea what its about? it was pretty cool.
 
You can but do you want to destroy coastal areas doing it? To put in the types of devices you are talking about one has to dig smash and build on coastal areas. Many people live on coasts and like the beaches. Also the marine life is a bit sensitive in these areas. These are but a few things to consider. Also the cost benefit. Is the amount of energy worth while?
 
Just saw this post. Guys check the OTEC system, a means of harvesting energy from the oceans. and it needs not to be on coastal areas. It's ratio of energy input-maintenance to energy output is not ideal but still promising. It's all due to development of a system which is still in its infancy.
