Off forum topic about converting an alkaloid

So swim was curious about an alkaloid and have been googling for days and can't find my answer and was hoping someone could possibly help with the question. So say if someone were to have calcium morphinate in a solution of xylene. Would it be possible to to use fumaric acid dissolved in acetone at the ratio of 7mg per mL to salt out the morphine? And if it is possible does anyone know the potency of the morphine fumarate vs. morphine hcl? Swim knows that morphine is a zwittercon and is a solid in both basic and salt forms but swim wants it to be water soluble and has access to lots of fumaric acid and not so much hcl acid.

Any information on the possibilities of this method would be greatly appreciated.

calcium morphinate is already a salt, i don't see how it would be soluble in
xylene.

Ok swim just realized that calcium morphinate is a water soluble salt. Swim question now is how would one salt a morphine base using fumaric acid, what solution should be used just plain distiiled water in a fasw solution? Swim would much rather use a solution that evaporates quickly but not to sure if anything besides fasw would work.

This makes swim think that fasa will work but swim has only made dmt salt with fasa and not too sure about morphines solubility cause swim has never worked with an alkaloid that is a freeacid and a free base simultaneously.

well, it's the calcium cation and morphinate anion. salts dissociate into cations and anions in polar solvents.

I don't know what the pKa's are for morphine, but this is important to know, so you can plan your fumaric acid solution. if you want a quick-evaporating solution, i'd suggest using methanol.

First of all Welcome to the Nexus!

If you want pure morphine fumarate you`d probably need to do stoichometric calculations and measure pH as benz mentioned, though possibly simply doing FASA would work (never tried or heard of anyone trying, and not chemistry-savvy enough to look at molecule and predict if it would work). If it works, im neither sure how much fumaric acid contamination that would yield or if that would be a problem anyways. Methanol would dissolve both fumaric acid as well as morphine fumarate, so it most likely wouldn`t precipitate like many alkaloids do for FASA.. But you could still evaporate it to retrieve your alkaloids, if you added the right amount of fumaric acid to prevent excess of it once methanol is evapped. Please make sure to evap it completely and not breathe fumes as methanol is toxic.

The thing is, morphine is an addictive substance with a certain specific (un)safety profile. It`s not a substance we usually talk about, though given a certain context, I don`t see a problem. But you have given no such context, so I don`t think it`s good for this thread to continue until you do.

Of course we all have the right to do whatever we want to do if it doesn`t hurt others, and I don`t want to seem like im judging you for using morphine, specially because I can`t know your reasons and context until you state it... So you can post that kind of info if you feel will help. We rather here in the Nexus avoid promoting/discussing such substances unless there`s a specific reason for it, there`s an appropriate context involved and if it is clear that people understand the risks involved and are aware of the possible alternative options and how to quit the use of such substances if they so desire.
