Optimal freeze temperature.

Hello everyone.

I am a seasoned traveller (if a little rusty), but I have to confess to being a bit of a noob on these forums, so please excuse me if I slip up.

I'm looking to buy a dedicated freezer, and I'm wondering if anyone could give me any advice about the kinds of temperature ranges I'd be looking for.

I've currently only got the ice-box in my fridge, and I'm pretty sure it's not cold enough, but am I wrong about this? I don't want to waste limited funds on something that won't make any difference.

Please accept my apologies if this question has been posted elsewhere. I did try a search, but I didn't see anything.

Don't worry about having asked the question, it's perfectly valid. Replies aren't necessarily instantaneous here - in fact they're rarely so. You may have more luck with getting quicker responses in the Nexus chat although that can rather depend on the time of day/week/month and whether Mercury has gone retrograde or something

What did you find out? It's pretty standard for domestic freezers (****) to go down at least as far as -18°C. They'll usually have a fast freeze function as well, and maybe a thermostat that allows you to take the temperature down to -24°C like mine does, which can come in useful.

Well thank you very much for the reply, as well as for the welcome. I appreciate that.

Actually, I did get some luck on the DMT World Discord, who were very friendly and helpful.

I'm told that the ideal range would be -25 degrees Celsius, or -10 Fahrenheit, which most dedicated freezers should manage easily.

I was also told that I'd be better off using xylene, and my overzealous kitchen air extractor.

I'm told that xylene really gets the whole lot out, and it's a whole lot cheaper than a new freezer.

Although I'm happy to stand corrected, if anyone would disagree?

I got myself one of those IR thermometer guns cheap off the internet. Anything below -9c seems to work well for me. Have not tried going much below -15c but yields have been great using Cybs max ion tech and MHRB

Xylene, while highly effective as a solvent, would require either evaporation or some kind of back-extraction to get the goods, plus it has a very penetrating odour, so there are pluses and minuses.

Then again, it may be better if you had some additional compelling reason for getting a new freezer, especially considering the present situation with energy costs in the UK. Given the threat of blackouts, you might not want to rely on having a freezer full of food in the coming months either.

As far as temperatures go, I found the lower temperature useful for some slightly obscure experiments regarding the solubility of DMT in aqueous ethanol which I suspect you won't have much of a need to replicate (although, of course, be my guest - science is fun!) but freeze precipitation from naphtha can give you a lovely clean product compared with the 'full spectrum' material that would be the result of a xylene-based extraction.

You make a very good point actually.

Apart from Ice-Cream (which is not to be underestimated), I actually have no use for a freezer at all, and not really the space to put it either.

What I do have though is an extremely zealous kitchen extractor fan.

Thanks for the advice though. That's definitely going into the notebook.

But I've ordered my xylene for this round. It arrives on Tuesday, although I might have to wait a week or so for the MHRB to go with it.
