I've heard the word but I've never known what a doujin is. It seems to be fanfiction anime or manga, is that correct?

Sorta. To my understanding, the doujin in the small community that likes to create otomads from given anime. The otomads are Japanese mash ups of anime and memes, often to make songs. It's intended to be kinda silly and funny most times.
